The initiative is back this year, and officials are aiming to double the number of employed youth.
Called GRow1000, the initiative was launched in 2020 in response to the pandemic and ongoing racial and economic disparities, city officials previously said.
Grand Rapids residents who are between the ages of 15 and 24 as of June 14 can apply for the jobs program by filling out the application at this link. Applicants also must be eligible to work in the U.S.
City commissioners in Grand Rapids were once again flooded with calls last night from people upset with the city’s police department.
This time, callers to the commissioner’s meeting spoke out against officers arresting eight protesters downtown Monday night. The city manager says the police department will review the arrests.
The protest was organized by the group Justice for Black Lives, in honor of George Floyd. Video from the march streamed on Facebook shows dozens of people taking to the streets during the march, before being ordered by police to go onto the sidewalk. Police then arrested some protesters in the crowd, and at least one arrest appeared to take place on the sidewalk.

The option agreement provides for the sale of approximately 11.6 acres of the northern portion of the approximately 17.5-acre 201 Market property estimated at up to $24.5 million.
The property appraisal takes into account the CAA’s investment in the decommission and relocation of the east side trunk sewer and costs related to the demolition of existing site improvements. The final sale price will be determined based on the appraised value per square foot of property established in the memorandum of unders
