points last month. let s bring in our panel wall street journal editorial member kyle peterson so kim, are you seeing more broadly this movement toward the republicans in the polls and what s behind it? i think you are seeing more prodly and you re seeing it both in the house an in the senate and i think it is post labor day of focus by voters again on core issues you look for instance at wisconsin and pennsylvania both of those candidates ron johnson and the republican side are talking very much on the economy inflation, but also an issue that s really resurfacing is crime. they re really beating up their opponents on it. whaing is also helped them no those states is having candidates that are very much part of the progressive left and it s been easier to pick up some of their past policies and show them to be a little bit of out of step with a lot of mainstream voters. kyle i was in wisconsin and
nod to the base, they re okay with him. and he s also to mainstream voters, which is why he was in loudoun last night. he thinks he can get those margins down. if he can do that, he has a good chance to win. i think there s a lot going into this race. for me in terms of next year, which i know is quickly where the discussion will go, you re going to see erosion. so democrats have to be real about that. some of that is unique to virginia, unique to new jersey, but you still had erosion. where did that happen with the eelectorate? i m optimistic because the pandemic may be endemic. the economy could be rolling. democrats maybe could get something done in washington and the republicans will be stuck just trying to campaign on culture wars and kissing donald trump s behind, which i don t think is a great strategy in an election. i think the democrats can get on a stronger footing but they re
proposals. things like the green new deal and medicare for all. it s an interesting dynamic going into an election that a lot of these revolutionary ideas, so revolutionary ideas, are so quite popular on their face inne i ask you this because you ve got the sanders/warren economic plans, which are very whether you like them or don t like them, they re very clear. there s structural reform. as jake just said, they re surprisingly popular with a lot of mainstream voters. but then you ve got people who are like the front-runner on the democratic side, joe biden, who i couldn t tell you right now with joe biden s economic plan is for america and some of the more moderate candidates like mayor pete, where they carved out a perception of what their personality is. but in terms of policy proposals, not nearly as clear as easily identifiable as what the left is saying. how does that play out among democrats? that s interesting, looking at elizabeth warren for an
but also give them a chance to kind of paint these candidates and the democratic party has been to left for mainstream voters. we thought that the republican primary stage was closed. thank you. one branch of the military is feeling the pain of the partial shutdown. the only active duty service members working without pay. we are more from staten island new york. it is the busiest operational command in the united states. many of them say they are gearing up for what could be a very big struggle in the coming weeks. their paychecks are on hold.
