Waking up to a bird’s-eye view of the very best of the Superstitions Weavers Needle, Battleship Mountain, Geronimo Head, and Black Mesa Mountain spread out in a semi-circle from north to south will make the frontcountry feel farther away than it is. (The petroglyphs in the area add to the immersive feeling.) Given that, it’s easy to forget that most of the 5.7-mile hike in was a breeze through wild oats and all manner of cacti from the Dutchman trailhead, though the final gain of 1,000 feet in a mile is likely to stick in your memory. River surfing isn’t as easy as it looks. Sure, there’s man-made, groomed waves like Bend, Oregon that make river surfing seem like a walk in the whitewater park. But then there’s natural waves like Lunch Counter near Jackson Hole or Pipeline on the Lochsa in Idaho. Or a whole host of lesser known spots out there.
Ben Gravy has done his share of river surfing but this wave in Vermont looks to be a fairly difficult spot. First off it’s a V-wave, which means it isn’t as uniform as many natural waves that pour over shelves and form river perfection. This wave is fast and the currents are as hectic as they come. But Ben makes it look relatively easy, which it isn’t. See the other surfer’s attempts for proof.
