least 19 people are now dead in mississippi. officials report at least 13 deaths in hard hit sharkey county where homes and businesses were flattened and trees and power lines were knocked down. three others were killed in humphreys county, and at least two people are in critical condition there, and we ve just learned that three more people were killed in carroll county search and rescue teams and first responders are on the scene in the hard hit areas north of jackson. we spoke with the resident from the town of rolling four who was on the phone with her grandmother when the tornado went through. listen to this. there s power lines all over the road. there s trees all over the road that there s brick buildings that are that are just laying out in the street. um actually. two houses down from my grandmother s house. everything is just a debris field that the houses are are just destroyed. alright let s get the latest now from cnn meteorologist karen mcginnis. karen, unfortun
with this breaking news. rescue teams are now on a desperate searching rescue for survivors after powerful destructive storms ripped through the south tornadoes tearing through mississippi overnight. at least 23 people are confirmed dead. another dead in alabama. dozens more injured and at least four others are still missing at this hour and many of the deaths happening in the town of rolling fork, mississippi neighborhoods there are simply leveled extraordinary scene there. the mayor sharing this bleak assessment of the damage on cnn this morning. right? that s all i see. a lot of families here are affected. uh lot of families are hurting. uh this community is. in the situation that we never expected by city is gone. but we will resilient and we re going to come back. wow my city is gone. cnn s isabel rizal is on the scene in rolling fork. right now that the sun is up, the heartbreak is becoming a lot more noticeable for the residents here at rolling fork everywhere you look
searching for survivors, starting to get a better picture of the full scope of the damage. let s go straight to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth. rick: hey, guys, we ve been trying to get our reporter out there, but the cell tower in rolling fork is gone, so they can t get any cell service. sunrise time there, local time, 7:01, so exactly right now. we ll start to get some of these images in daylight. this tornado happening in the dark can last night, we ve not had any daytime, so search and rescue efforts will continue. this is that storm right now, a weakening storming which is good news. today the severe weather threat key minishingses diminishes quite a bit. the tornado first dropped in rolling fork and then cut right here across rt parts of north-central mississippi. at one point it looks like this tornado was on the ground probably for around almost 100 miles. this, obviously, national weather service folks go out and do some investigation, make sure, see if sometim
