âSpace Jam: A New Legacyâ isnât really a movie. It is a commercial. But letâs be clear, âSpace Jamâ was ALWAYS a commercial.
The original âSpace Jamâ was a spin-off of a series of popular Nike ads starring basketball legend Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny, so being a feature length ad is baked into the DNA of this franchise. Warner Bros. just really leans into it with the whole movie becoming a giant ad for the studioâs intellectual properties.
The cynic in me wants to hate this, but â taken for what it is â it is sorta fun. After all, some commercials can be very entertaining.

LeBron James carried the Lakers to a championship last year, but he can’t save “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” in theaters and streaming on HBO Max on Friday.
Credit where it’s due: “Space Jam: A New Legacy” knows what it’s up against and has a sense of humor about it.
At one point in the film, which bears, um, certain similarities to “Space Jam,” the 1996 film starring Michael Jordan and a bevy of Looney Tunes characters, LeBron James is explaining the situation to Bugs Bunny (voice of Jeff Bergman). Cartoon characters playing in a high-stakes basketball game? “Sounds awfully familiar,” Bugs says.
