Lise Ravary: Who will live in all those downtown condos?

Article content I have a burning question for people in the real-estate business. I don’t mean those in the business of selling mid-century bungalows in Terrebonne. I’m talking about those involved in marketing the swanky condo units that make up the bulk of new housing construction in Montreal, places with marble-look granite kitchen counters and standalone bathtubs whose shape is supposed to remind us of freshly laid eggs. The décor will fall out of fashion in five years, maybe six. Historic Griffintown was massacred so developers could build those horrors by the dozen, initially without any regard for the need for urban “accessories” like schools and places of worship. Or parks. Or public pools. As if the condo tower were the centre of urban life.
