the nation s second largest school district is now the first major district to require vaccines for students. the city of los angeles is mandating that any student 12 and older be vaccinated by january. and that mandate applies to more than 460,000 students. joining us now is nbc news correspondent steve patterson outside of walter reed middle school in l.a., and the mandate, steve, it has gotten pushback since the school board approved it yesterday. what are you hearing from the parents? well, look, any time you have a mandate this big, geoff, in a district this large, of course, there is going to be pushback, but by and large what we have heard from the parents is a lot of solidarity from this. you have to remember this is not the first covid stipulation or mandate that the district has pioneered already some of the strictest mask mandates and the students have to wear them indoors or outdoors and requiring the vaccinations for staff and teachers and then some of the strictest and
