Strasburg council rejects road expansion project

Strasburg council rejects road expansion project Barb Limbacher STRASBURG Village Council members voted 4-2 to defeat a proposal to expand US Route 250 (Wooster Avenue) to a third lane through the village of Strasburg intended to alleviate traffic congestion. Council members Marty Zehnder, Don Wallick, Liz Dreher and Kathy Burrier voted Tuesday to end pursuing the three-lane concept. Jeff Smith and Dustin Briggs voted to continue pursuing the project. A decision on the proposal had to be made by April 6. The Ohio Department of Transportation is expected to pave Route 250 through the village this summer. A new water line will be installed on Route 250 north in the village prior to the paving. Judy Bennett of ODOT conducted a traffic study, at a cost of $8,300, which she presented to council stating that an additional lane could be installed. She said ODOT statistics indicate there is less traffic through the village than there was 18 years ago. That statement produced laugh

March 2 meeting KEY ACTION  Heard Mayor Steve Smith contacted the Ohio Public Works about the green space on Wooster Avenue. He also contacted the Ohio Department of Transportation about putting three lanes through the village and eliminating on-street parking. Council members did not comment on the matter. Smith said the traffic study should be done and would be presented at the 6 p.m. April 6 meeting.  DISCUSSION: Council was given the information on the green space and three-lane concept at Tuesday’s council meeting. Smith ask the deed restrictions be removed at the property located at 115 N. Wooster. The green space was a $174,035 grant but the final funds dispersed was $121,508. OPW would be agreeable to the repayment of the disbursed amount and waive any liquated damages in exchange for removal of the deed restrictions. Smith wants make the green space into a parking lot. Smith said the green space is being driven across by individuals wanting to access the post office.
