Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas two months after the Confederacy had surrendered.
June 19 falls on a Sunday this year so most Federal employees will get Monday off. All federal government offices, federal courts, banks, post offices, schools, and the U.S. financial markets will be closed Monday June 20.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrated on June 19th. It commemorates the day of June 19, 1865, when a Union General informed the residents of Galveston, Texas that all the slaves in their community had been freed two and half years earlier in accordance with President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which took effect January 1, 1863.
