It is such an honor to speak to you all about the battle of Wilsons Creek which was fought in 1861 in a southwestern corner of missouri, my home state. The subtitle of this presentation is called this means war the battle of Wilsons Creek. I want to take us back to june 11 of 1861 in st. Louis, missouri to the hotel which is just downtown at one of the Nicest Hotels in the 20th 19th century. Important early war leaders met there. You have Nathaniel Lyon, his aide, francis p. Blair, and for the secessionist leaders, you have major clayborn jackson, governor jacksons aide. They come to keep the peace if possible. They are there to negotiate they , are there to prevent the outbreak of war in missouri. She explained that the conflict, while not widely known, is significant because it was the first major battle west of the mississippi river. Aaron is a native of michigan not far from lansing, did his undergraduate work at northwestern before spending time working in washington, d. C. And moved on to the university of virginia where he studied under gary gallagher. Book is entitled why confederates fought family and nation in civil war virginia. His most recent book, published by harvard, titled calculus of violence how americans fought the civil war. Just again published in 2018. Aaron, lsu is a great place for him. Aaron is a self proclaimed foody so has lots of places to select from in new orleans but today well talk about his book, which has received two recent awards including the Jefferson Davis award from formerly the museum of the confederacy, now the American Civil War museum in richmond. Developments shaped the civil war, and hopefully get a sense of whats going on outside, in the rest of the world. In some ways, this is not a new thing. People have been writing diplomatic histories of the civil war really since the years after the conflict ended. But the combination of the sesquicentennial, a new rethinking of 19thcentury globalization, and really the current context in which americans are sort of rethinking what it means to be part of a larger world, in a postcold war era, has generated a lot of rich scholarship that situates the u. S. Civil war in a broader context. Were fortunate to have three young, excellent scholars who will help guide us through this, and we of course look forward to your questions at the end.
