But he says something besides rust is eating away at the bridges foundation. They also have questions about are there very small microorganisms that are feeding on iron. And thats kind of a new bring in the bridge world. Reporter the process is called microbiologically influenced corrosion. It turns out that the bay floor is rich with the tiny creatures that cause it. According to the assessment report we obtained under the public records act, the microbes leave pits that experts liken to holes left by worms and termites in wood. For now, caltrans is focusing on finding out if microbes are to blame and whether other bay bridges could be at risk. Thats really something new.
