Nas and his HSTRY clothing label are giving
Coming 2 America fans a way to sport the cult-favorite film’s sequel on their sleeves. The New York-bred rapper (born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones) has teamed with the Craig Brewer-directed Amazon Original comedy (now streaming on Amazon Prime) on a limited-edition collection that “stands true to both the film’s and Nas’ roots from Africa to Queens,” per a release.
The film, which stars Eddie Murphy as a king from the fictional African country of Zamunda, features a photograph of the African royal, whose house has ties to Oman.
In a scene where Lavelle Junson, the newly found son of Murphy’s King Akeem Joffer is tasked with learning more about his royal background, he’s quizzed about past members of the family.
As he’s learning who is who, he’s presented with a black-and-white photograph of a young man sitting on a throne wearing a black bisht with an Omani massar.
In the film, the man is identified as Hebbe Joffer , a distant relative of King Joffer. In reality, while that isn t actually his name, the man in the photo was indeed a member of a royal family.
Grade: 3.5/5.0
“Coming to America” was a blockbuster hit when it was released 33 years ago, boasting success in the U.S. box office and worldwide. Starring Eddie Murphy as Prince Akeem Joffer and Arsenio Hall as his best friend and adviser Semmi, the film follows an affluent African prince who visits New York on a quest to meet his queen-to-be; it memorably finds enrapturing comedy in the contrast between Akeem’s happy-go-lucky exuberance and rugged New York City life.
Similar to the first film, director Craig Brewer’s sequel “Coming 2 America” starts off on a beautiful morning in the heavenly paradise that is the palace of Zamunda, a fictional African kingdom. The last time viewers saw Prince Akeem, he was getting married to his true love, Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley) of Queens, New York. Three decades later, it’s now their wedding anniversary and Akeem is crowned king, but every king needs an heir to their throne. Who will rule Zamunda if Akeem only has daughters
