Manna from heaven came into Marilyn Murphy s life on Thursday in the form of the new Venice Aldi store.
Murphy, who lives in Venice three months a year, is an Aldi devotee. When she s in her full-time state of Illinois, she goes to Aldi. In Florida, she drives to Aldi as far away as North Port or Port Charlotte to stock up on groceries. She lives six miles away from the one in Nokomis and now she s just a mile away from the one in Venice s Jacaranda Plaza.
She plans to take advantage of this close proximity by walking to Aldi from where she lives. She even has her own shopping cart that she plans to push around on the sidewalks along U.S. 41.
The reality series follows the Foy family and three restaurants they run in Bolton Landing, a tourist town at Lake George. Married couple Buddy Foy Jr. and Jennifer Foy, who operate Chateau on the Lake, will also serve as co-owners of The Chateau Anna Maria.
In a phone interview with the Herald-Tribune, Foy Jr. said he already knew Sarasota-Manatee well through family. His parents Cate and Buddy Foy Sr. have lived on Anna Maria Island for more than 20 years, his brother Keith lives in Sarasota and his daughter Summer graduated this year from IMG Academy in Bradenton.
“It’s a very similar environment during the winter in Florida as it was here in the summer, Foy Jr. said. (We said) let’s duplicate what we did, let’s bring our employees and keep them employed, and let’s go for it.

MANATEE COUNTY – Another rock star now has a home in Sarasota-Manatee.
Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and his ballet dancer girlfriend Melanie Hamrick have bought a Manatee County house at 15809 Clearlake Ave. in The Lake Club in Lakewood Ranch, according to Michael Saunders & Company. The four-bedroom estate sits on roughly a third of an acre surrounded by lake views and includes 8,394 square feet under the roof and 5,726 square feet of living or business space.
It was sold for $1,980,000 on Oct. 28, according to MSC, with the couple choosing the home primarily for its privacy and to be close to Hamrick’s family, who lives in the area. The deed was recorded Nov. 4 and the house is in Hamrick’s name. The sellers were Ray and Loretta Harris, who originally purchased the house in January 2010 for $1.2 million, according to Manatee County records.

Many in the county’s private and public sectors didn’t see it coming.
The plan to attract the company that is changing the face of retail across the world came not from the county’s own agency that’s responsible for drawing businesses. It came from a local entrepreneur and County Commission Chairman Mike Moran.
Moran, who, after a lunch meeting in downtown Sarasota with Shay Atluru, the CEO/president at consulting firm DTC, convinced a friend to offer land in Venice to help seal the deal.
Last Wednesday, just months after the Amazon facility’s August opening, the leadership of the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County took partial credit for bringing Amazon and the 300-plus jobs that came with it.
