captions by vitac www.vitac.com and welcome back to our continuing coverage of the chaos in washington, d.c. it has been quite a day and quite a night. first, kevin mccarthy lost his sixth vote to become house speaker. the house adjourned. members then reconvened briefly, only to adjourn until noon tomorrow, with the speaker more upbeat about his chances. why are things looking more upbeat for mccarthy? reporter: he s hearing more positive responses from those opponents, the people that have essentially seemed immovable for the past two days. but after a meeting in which mccarthy has made a number of concessions, ranging on political issues, how his outside group engages on key issues, as well as giving them more power and more sway over themselves, the rank and file at the expense of the leadership, some of these members sound like they re moving in direction. congressman mike cloud, for one, says the talks are moving in a positive light, in his view, as well as scot
good evening, everyone. i m laura coats, and this is cnn tonight. well, they re going to come back and do it all tomorrow. the house voting to adjourn until noon. that s congressional time for 9:00 a.m. and they barely got the votes to do that tomorrow, giving kevin mccarthy is few more hours to try to make a last-ditch deal that would give him the speakership. i think it s probably best that people work through some more. and i think i don t think the vote tonight will be any different but a vote in the future will. do you have a deal with those guys now? not yet but we re making a lot of progress. our reporting indicates that some members may actually be moving in mccarthy s direction, which maybe there is a break in the clouds for him. but there is no doubt the horse trading will go on well into the night, but it s been a long and chaotic and frankly embarrassing display so far. i mean, there were three votes yesterday. three more votes earlier today. no memb
pennsylvania, casey, bob casey, wrote after the debate fetterman has a clear record of public service, knows the commonwealth, cares about pennsylvania, will be a great senator. like no comment at all about the debate itself. i thought it was just kind of interesting that the two senators had those reactions. clearly a rorschach test. clearly how they want people to view this, through a particular lens. either they know, or only two weeks away from the midterm elections, so these are the candidates. these are the options. so, i guess the reflecting that in terms of how they want people to have an understanding of what happened. and our panel will have very strong feelings. they wanted to. and they ve got very strong feelings about how john fetterman performed. i mean, obviously all eyes were on him. and it was challenging. it seemed like it at certain times. yeah. so, okay jake, thank you very much for setting the table for us. all right, guys. did you even see

president biden says he believes that s because of how terribly russia is doing on the battlefield. he used the word underperforming, how he believes the setbacks, humiliating and the draft that putin put in place is all factoring into this. it seems to be causing a real sense of concern for president biden tonight who said he believes the world is the closest it has been to the potential nuclear catastrophe since the 1960s. since the cuban missile crisis, of course, we are coming up on the anniversary of that quite soon. president biden said tonight we have not faced the prospect of armageddon since kennedy and the cuban missile crisis. he is talking about putin. a guy we know fairly well, he is not joking when he talks about the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons because his military is, as you might say, significantly underperforming. he made clear, don, washington is trying to figure out what putin s end game is going to be, what h
