Reporter it is going to be a very long frigid night, Jim For County officials as they will be out in these conditions going through hundreds of Stranded Cars Inn erie county and rescuig people inside. Officials said this is something they feared of happening so they implemented at 9 30 this morning a driving ban hoping people would stay home but sadly, we know there are many people out in these kinds of conditions, jim. Ill let you look at this for yourself. These Whipping Winds started early this morning and been relentless. They have not stopped and mark, the executive of erie county reporting it is very like ly these conditions will continue all night but the winds are likely to continue. Earlier today wind gusts of 79 miles an hour confirmed by the National Weather service in buffalo. That surpassed what they saw during a historic blizzard in 1977. So authorities certainly not kidding, jim, when they said this was going to be an extraordinary storm. Finally, authorities here are sending out as much advice as they can to folks that are str stranded. I know sometimes folks will listen to us on Satellite Radio in cars. The key advice if youre stranded to stay in the car and simply run it for ten minutes at a time for heat, make sure that exhaust is clear and then to make sure that authorities can see you if they pass by but again, the key to stay in the vehicle and finally, ill show you why as i make sure there is no traffic coming. If you step out of the car, its so easy to basically lose any visibility and become extremely disoriented and thats what authorities are worried about come tomorrow morning many people could at least they could wake up to horrible news and thats why authorities will be working all night long, braving this conditions to make sure that people are safe and really what ive heard time and time again here, jim, coming from even governor kathy hochul, people need to resist the urge in the area to leave their homes to spend christmas with their families if theyre not with them already. Weve been seeing the number of cancellations continue to tick up over the day. 500 just here at ohare alone, the airport announced. When you look nationwide, weve seen more than 5300 air Flight Cancellations across the u. S. , according to flight aware and that is on top of the more than 9200 delays we have seen at airports across the u. S. Today and all of that happening the day before Christmas Eve when the demand to maybe get to somewhere warm or even more importantly, to get to loved ones is as high as it would ever be and all of those factors, of course, with the Winter Conditions we are seeing have come together to create a bit of chaos here. 3,000 or so cancellations this morning and now already above 5,000. Chicago, this is the coldest christmas there, Christmas Eve since 1983. What are officials telling people about how to safely stay warm . When it comes to the dangers from this system, it is this bitter, bitter air that were all experiencing in places that dont normally experience these types of temperatures, as birmingham, alabama, jackson, mississippi, atlanta, georgia, were going to be below freezing for at least 48 hours. This is on the eve of Christmas Eve, that could be the coldest in the record books for atlanta going back 50 years. In the city proper we have 50 people stranded in cars and erie county could be as many as 200 people stranded in cars. We impose driving bans this morning at 9 30 a. M. We knew that this storm would get people caught up, that people would get stuck if they drove unnecessary and what we feared when we imposed the driving ban certainly is happening right now. We will be sending buffalo police, Buffalo Firefighters and erie county sheriffs out to rescue people that are stranded in their cars, those people that drove unnecessarily, they put themselves at risk and theyre putting First Responders at risk, as well. So for folks watching this right now, were couple days to christmas, they still want to see their family and see their friends. What do you say to them about what they should and should not do tomorrow and the next day . Well, nobody should have been driving today. The driving ban will extend into tomorrow and our major priority is Public Safety and the safety of First Responders and essential workers. So its hard to look, the committee did what it needed to do to put together a sound report. People will be charged with crimes more than weve seen and well go from there. Should we expect a similar scale, scope and aggressiveness from republicans as weve seen from the January 6th Committee . I do think youre going to see an aggressive investigative and oversight agenda from House Republicans and the afghanistan withdrawal, the failed afghanistan withdrawal will be a major issue that theyre going to pursue as well as a southern border and some other issues that would be very smart to focus on these issues that are frankly more relevant to what is happening today. I think they would make a mistake House Republicans if they maybe chose to revisit the events of january 6th. The talk about the security at the capitol. Its not going to happen. They need to turn the page and the oversight needs to be serious and sober and the tone will matter. You know, its just going to be a lot of people yelling andi screaming. Thats not going to help. They need substantive oversight to the American Public or will be judged harshly. Margaret, you have some of the former president s advisors telling him to make the next run for 2024 not backyard looking, not to look at the 2020 election, look forward. Trump is not one to always follow advice even of his closest advisors. Do we expect his 2024 run to be as much about 2020 as weve heard so far . Well, you know, jim, he doesnt seem to want to let it go. He is still harping on the false notion that he should have been elected president or was elected president. I think the question is to what extent is january 6th going to play in the 2024 gop primary and by all indications, it is not going to be something that most of the candidates that we expect to enter the race will bring up on their own. Liz cheney may be, most others know for one as you said Congressional Republicans as they assume the pant lmantle of majority in the house will investigate the investigators so that will run contrary to that playbook. These candidates whether ron desantis or others in the race, they dont need to bring it up. This is baked in the cake and baked in the cake as a general election issue and i think what youre going to hear from a messaging perspective is republicans in the primary talk about winning and their prospects of winning a general election in 2022, the midterms prec presented a road map for that and the candidates didnt do well and that will be the way january 6th is cast. Elliott, one of the many legal questions the Justice Department has to address is a question of intent, right . That gets to whether trump believed that the election was actually stolen. When you see pieces of testimony like the one in jessicas report there where even the president himself said at times this is crazy, used the word crazy to describe theories about this, does that begin to approach the standard of saying he had intent . Has the shine come off him except for a small fraction or at least not a majority of republicans. Hes accumulated so much baggage right now it would be hard for him to win a primariry unless he won a field. There is no question hes been diminished because hes so focused on the past and his own, you know, personal grievances about what happened in the 2020 election. They wanted to stay on the street and we had the bishop as a matter of fact wanted to talk to them because theyre afraid of getting deported so they didnt want to go in so we were literally out there working with them and talking to them and our final effort last night is we put two city buses, left them running and walked away from them and told them please come in, come into the city buses because its going to be really cold. Like i told you earlier, it got very cold last night so we opened the Convention Center. We have the capacity of 2,000 beds and working with the churches and ngos and bishop and nuns on The Street Last Night urging the people to please come inside. Good for them. I mean, is there anything to back up the refugees fears if they seek help, they might end up getting sent out of the cou country .
