Speculation tax exemption created for some B C commercial property tenants

VANCOUVER An exemption has been introduced for dozens of B.C. businesses who were charged a speculation vacancy tax for the air space above their leased spaces. Finance Minister Selina Robinson discussed the new exemption Thursday, a couple of weeks after some businesses reported being dinged on empty space.  Dan Rodriguez, the owner of Las Margaritas in Kitsilano, told CTV News Vancouver earlier this month that his bill went up by $6,000 this year because of the tax. Rodriguez does not own the land, but he pays taxes and maintenance fees as part of the lease agreement with his landlord.

Air tax relief coming for businesses, B C government announces

Article content The B.C. government will provide relief to businesses hit by the speculation and vacancy tax on the airspace above their premises. Dan Fumano: Ex-B C NDP premier among those pushing for air-tax fix

Article content After Postmedia News revealed this week that B.C.’s “speculation and vacancy tax” had started hitting the airspace above some mom-and-pop businesses this year, this reporter’s inbox was flooded with messages from bewildered readers. Some were from sympathetic small-business owners, while others expressed furor in language unpublishable in a family newspaper. Some of the outrage over this week’s story came from regular critics of the B.C. NDP, including a B.C. Liberal news release declaring: “New NDP air tax pushes struggling businesses to the brink.” We apologize, but this video has failed to load.
