Small businesses, B.C.’s Opposition and municipalities are calling on the provincial government to scrap its vacancy tax on the airspace of low-density commercial property, a tax they say unfairly burdens businesses already struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s mind-boggling how the government can be planning to increase taxes through the speculation and vacancy tax (SVT) on small businesses, basically at a time when they can least afford it,” said Annie Dormuth, spokeswoman for the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses. “Small businesses cannot stand any further or additional tax increases.”

Dan Rodriguez recently learned he’ll need to cough up an extra $6,000 in taxes this year for the speculation and vacancy tax, a measure introduced by the provincial government with the stated aim of “turning empty homes into good housing for people who live and work in B.C.”
But Rodriguez isn’t on the hook because of any empty homes he owes because of the air above his restaurant.

The Madrid government has extended mobility restrictions to several areas in response to a rise in the coronavirus cases. As of Monday, another six basic healthcare zones â areas that are smaller than a district and include several primary healthcare centers â and three municipalities are under a perimetral lockdown, meaning residents can only enter and leave for essential reasons, such as to go to work.
The six zones are Las Margaritas, in the municipality of Getafe; San Fernando, in San Fernando de Henares; Villaviciosa de Odón, in the town of Villaviciosa de Odón; and in the city of Madrid: Alameda de Osuna (Barajas district), Rejas (San Blas-Canillejas district) and Chopera (Arganzuela district). The municipalities of La Cabrera, Moralzarzal and Colmenarejo have also been placed under a perimetral lockdown.
