schumer. cnn will bring you the president s remarks when they begin. let s start with the new gdp report. with me is matt egan. walk us through the report, the numbers, what you see. so broadly consumers were still spending. it is a slowdown for sure but overall that was a positive contributor to gdp. on the other hand, government spending slowed down. when we look at where consumers are spending, it s an acceleration of what we ve seen. we spent less on physical items. services, however, think airfare, which is why airports are so busy these days, hotels and restaurants, that really accelerated. business spending declined and inventories, which we have been hearing from a lot of retailers for sure but also other companies they are trying to move out their inventory, there has been a mismatch of what they have. that was reflected here, too. i think to put it simply, it is clearly showing a slowdown. matt, this is you ve written a lot about this. this is one of the big i

world. i m wolf blitzer and you re in the situation room. we begin this hour with very encouraging news for the u.s. economy. and for the biden administration. tonight the president is seizing on the much better than expected jobs report as he caps a week of unexpected successes. here is our white house correspondent jeremy diamond. today we received another outstanding jobs report. reporter: tonight president biden hailing another strong jobs report and promising more relief to americans struggling with stubbornly high prices. today there are more people working in america than before the pandemic began. in fact, there are more people working in america than at any point in american history. reporter: the unemployment rate dipping to 3.5% as the economy added 528,000 jobs last month. bucking expectations and tamping down fears of a recession. but the strong jobs report will do little to beat back inflation. americans number one concern. i know people will hear
jacking up interest rates, raising bar owing costs. on thursday our first look at u.s. economic growth for the second quarter, another decline in gdp is expected. of course, two quarters of a loss in a row is a sign of a recession, so are we head there had? here is the treasury secretary. the labor market is now extremely strong. we are in a period of transition in which growth is slowly. we re likely to see some slowing of job creation, but i do i don t think that that s a recession. a recession is broad-based weakness in the economy. we re not seeing that now. we re not seeing that now, but here is this from someone who used to have that job, the former treasury secretary larry somers. i think there is a very high likelihood of recession when we ve been in in kind of situation before. recession has essentially always followed when inflation has been high and unemployment has been low. soft landings represent a kind of triumph of hope over experience, i think we re v
