This is a reminder to everyone as theyre creeping back to their properties to be careful, right . Yeah. Christine, thanks for having me on today. The conditions down here have been dangerous for anyone, even for First Responders and for teams like myself, Restoration Companies that come in and help. Youve got downed power lines, you dont have stop lights working so its really hard to even kind of function in this area because its so hard to get through anywhere. Yeah. Theres still rescue efforts underway here. Before you can really focus i guess on the cleanup, youve got to make sure you can get to people and get them safe. What should people know right now . I mean, the storm surge, the flood waters and the wind damage. How do you put those pieces back together . Christine, its pretty much utter devastation around here. If you were within a mile of the coast from everywhere that ive been and seen, theres not a lot left of the homes through there. And people that havent been able to get back into their homes, you know, a lot of these areas theyre not going to be able to get back into for some time. Theyre going to expect to find that their home has been destroyed or leveled. Theyre going to find their home is going to be completely full of mold and microbial growth. Theyre going to find theyre probably going to be without power for many weeks or months and hard to even start the rebuild effort without power. Feel the whoa Russian Forces driven out of the strategic city have moved north 15 miles. Video released by Ukrainian Special ops showing them ambushing a group in donetsk. In moscow they rubber stammed the annexation. Cnns Nick Peyton Walsh joins us live from Inside Ukraine again. The kremlin said its, quote, consulting, consulting to establish exact borders. What does that tell you . Reporter it tells that you their policy is in complete disarray. They are already supposed to have, quote, consulted the public when they held the sham referenda if they were conducted on Military Occupation at the points of the gun being asked to ask somebody what direction they wanted to vote. So were in this Odd Situation where russias reality continues there. Parliamentary bodies rubber stamping what we knew was going to happen anyway. As soon as they announced they were going to be having the referenda that it would be ushered through. The problem the kremlin have is they dont control significant parts of the areas and they control less day by day. Dmitry peskov asked where the borders of kherson, zaporizhzhia, two regions where they have claimed their territory, where they began and ended, how much have they thought they had assimilated. They couldnt tell how much they had, they were consulting with the population. That was a fudge because they know day by day theyre losing more, particularly here in the south in the kherson region. Theres been significant ukrainian advances. Frankly, possibly tens of kilometers into russian lines which is an enormous reversal in a vast area that Russian Troops have tried to hold on to. It appears the ukrainians have been very successful in pushing down the west side of the dnipro river. It appears to have been thought among russian officials they may need to withdraw from because they couldnt supply it well enough. The ukrainians making a lot of h headway there and east of lyman. Not overnight progress but they continue to methodically choose a path and essentially surround it and cause it to give up like we saw in lyman. The idea we are dealing with two separate ukrainian fronts advancing, thats the ultimate nightmare for the kremlin. Theyve struggled to prevent one, now they have two. Theyre struggling to get the partially mobilized recruits up to the front line. While we have this odd continued rhetoric about how chunks of ukraine are essentially russia in the eyes of moscow, they lose and lose and lose to a definite cost of ukraine certainly in terms of troops they have to send into harms way here. But a remarkable tide here which seems to have been for weeks going in ukraines favor. Back to you. Nick peyton walsh. Thanks, nick. Lets bring in mary. Shes from latvia. The Russian Forces will be consulting, quote, unquote, with residents on how to establish borders after its already claimed this land. What does that tell you about the russian strategy here . And exactly who is it consulting with . I have to imagine this is a frightened population and many people have actually left the area. Good morning, christine. Youre absolutely right. I am not sure how they can consult with the local population, theyre Going Village by village, conducting another referendum like nick pointed out, they have consulted, in quotes, with the public with the referendums. In kherson and zaporizhzhia they control maybe a little bit over half of these regions but they dont have full control. Essentially it looks quite embarrassing because russia says they dont know where their International Borders are at the moment because they dont know where to draw the line and they are increasingly losing land in those areas. Whats important with lyman is that this opens up a way for Ukrainian Forces to advance into the Luhansk Region which is the most controlled russian region so far. They have the most land under their control. If they break through there, that means all of their standing in all of these four regions is very much under question. We have a map that shows the Luhansk Region, just how controlled it is by the russians at this moment but getting closer to that area from by the ukrainians must be concerning for the kremlin. Look, russian lawmakers just rubber stamped this annexation, right, of ukrainian territory, but as you point out, ukraine continues to liberate these towns that have been occupied by the russians. How is this possible that they say they its their territory but it is now occupied again by ukrainians . Its a split screen for me. Its as if Vladimir Putin is trying to project this is russian territory inside russia but in reality this is ukraine. Exactly. This shows the kremlin is more and more detached from the reality. Vladimir putin, one of the reasons why he rushed these referendums, they have been postponed continuously. They were hoping they would hold them in early summer, by then Russian Forces will completely control the territories, that didnt happen because ukraine, you know, theyve gathered steamed with the counter offensive. Theyre presenting to the russians, we are winning. We have these territories that liberated them. The reality on the ground is exactly opposite. It shows that their strategy is, again, in complete disarray. They dont know exactly where theyre going with this and how to proceed controlling these lands if theyre continuing to lose this. And there is a mobilization and part of the reason why mobilization was called is to bring more men to hold these tertiaries, hold these rounds. Were hearing they are so clearly trained, sometimes not trained at all and they dont have enough equipment to do that. Whether that will help them to hold these territories is questionable. Nick was reporting that people in lyman were unaware that they had been annexed. Theyre just trying to get through daily life and figure out how to get to the next day. So there are these fears in western capitols that putin may escalate things on the ground and trying to game out what kind of response would there be. How do you think the u. S. And the west need to respond to these, the saberrattling really, the nuclear saberrattling by the russian president . What they have been doing so far is working. Theyve supplied the ukrainians with a lot of weapons and continue to do so. These weapons have been a huge game changer especially the hymar systems. Anything that can help them strike further into russian front lines is helping them to advance. They dont have to send as many troops into the area. They cant specifically target russian territories there. What were hearing from not the official Russian Defense minister which is claiming victory after victory, but a lot of Disgruntlled Separatists and military bloggers, theyre saying their problem is not manpower, what theyre struggling with is the increase in the ukrainian electronic warfare. They dont have eyes into what the ukrainians are doing. Thats why theyre suffering so many setbacks and their equipment is not on par. That is partially credited to what the west have been doing. They have sanctioned essentially any kind of imports of microelectronics and things that can help russians advance in that sort of part of this military strategy. All these things so far have been working for the ukrainians. Mary, thank you so much. Nice to see you this morning. Always nice to see you. Thank you. A russian journalist who protested the war live on state tv is now on Vladimir Putins wanted list. They say marina escaped house arrest over the weekend. Lets bring in cnns claire sebastian. Im sure i said her name wrong. She certainly made a name for herself with that statement there. Do we know where she is now . Christine, we dont have any idea. What we know is her former husband told state media that on saturday she left house arrest taking their daughter with her. Her lawyer told cnn simply that she had gone. He wouldnt say any more than that. According to state media, as you say, has been placed on the interior ministrys wanted list which means shes a fugitive from the law. She took part of that somewhat iconic protest in march. She fled russia and came back. She was arrested again at the beginning of august and placed under house arrest on charges of spreading false information about the Russian Armed forces, charges that carry a maximum 10year sentence. That was set to come to an end on october 9th. We dont know any more apart from recent posts on her verified telegram the last of which was on September 21st where she said she was visited and officially warned by the authorities not to take part in protests even though she said she couldnt anyway because she was under house arrest and wearing an ankle bracelet. It seems she was under some pressure but we dont know any more at this stage, christine. Claire, thank you so much. Keep us posted. Thats the sound of Air Raid Sirens just hours ago in tokyo right after north korea fired a Ballistic Missile over japan. The Biden Administration strongly condemning this launch. Lets go live to cnns blake essig. The launch has people warning to take cover and shelter. Reporter yeah. Look, christine, ive got to tell you waking up to find out north korea had fired a Ballistic Missile is not a great way to start your day. Look, this is not the first time north korea has launched a Ballistic Missile that flew over japan. The last time was 2017. It absolutely marks a significant escalation as the recent tests seemed designed to strike key targets in the region. It is expected they have all condemned north koreas actions while the u. S. And the south korean militaries have fired two joint attack munition bombs in response. An Associate Professor of International Studies at ewa International Womens studies in seoul says for tokyo this is not only a matter of National Security but the defense of international order. The kim regime might be trying to weaken the alliance and pyongyangs recent aggression might cause People Living in south korea and japan to question their cooperation with the united states. He went on to say the latest mis Missile Launch is in violation of the recent meetings. In a series of tweets the Prime Ministers Office warned the public and urged People Living in places like hokkaido to evacuate in buildings and underground. As a result of this mornings launch the government issued a j alert which is a rare alert only issued in times of National Emergencies in earthquakes, attacks and Missile Launches. In spite of the sounds you heard moments ago that could be heard here in tokyo, life continued to really go on as normal with many people apparently ignoring the warnings and continuing on their way to work, perhaps the reason some on social media despite Air Raid Warnings and the initial concern that a missile was heading their way. Nothing could be done. So it is worth noting, christine, that experts believe todays missile test was a hwasong 12 missile which is the same type that flew over japan in 2019. Its the eighth time this missile has been tested. Christine . Wow. Certainly terrifying. Nerve rattling. Blake, thank you so much. Corporate ceos citing recession as their biggest worry. According to a survey of 400 leaders of large u. S. Companies, a whopping 91 predict a recession in 12 months. Only 1 3 think it will be mild or short. Theyre thinking of job cuts to deal with the potential fallout. Lets bring in the Global Business columnist for the financial times. Her new book coming out in two weeks is called homecoming, the path to prosperity in a post global world. Ceos are nervous. Theyre paid a lot to be nervous and worried about whats around the corner. Im surprised only 1 3 think it will be mild and short. Look, were headed for something rough but it could be more like a technical recession or something we havent seen before. What do you make of that . Well, you know, i think that its hard to find a bright spot right now for global ceos. If you look at the global picture, regardless of euro penal market rallies, europes in a tough spot. Chinas in a tough spot. The u. S. , lets face it, we havent had a serious recession in a really long time. You know, Nobody Wishes for a recession or for bad news, but its not surprising that there would be one right now. You know, i think that there are shortterm trends and there are some of the bigger structural changes that are happening in the economy. Basically its a really bumpy world. I think i would be hardpressed if i was a ceo to say, you know, no, i think things are going to be great from here on out. You have a really good take on the manufacturing renaissance happening in the u. S. Right you know, geopolitical strife, worries about supply chain disruptions, all of the things we have seen in the past few years through the pandemic and war on ukraine are making a lot of companies think, you know what, id like to make things closer to home. We have seen a resurgence in manufacturing work. When covid hit about 1. 36 million jobs in industry were cut right away because people just stopped buying things, factories stopped making things. Now those jobs are back plus another nearly 70,000 and, you know, i have been traveling. I traveled for my book. Ive been traveling in the last week through the supply chain in various parts of the american south. I see a lot of growth. I see a lot of opportunity for all kinds of reasons. You know, people are worried about whats happening in china. Theyre worried about decoupling. Worried about energy. Also, there are a lot of trends favoring making things closer to home, environmental reasons. Yeah. Quicker to market. You know, all kinds of things that i know that you know about. I really see this as something thats going to be a major tailwind to the industrial sector and jobs and innovation in this country. You look at how far flung the Supply Chains became at the peak of globalization. So many jobs off shored. That became a real political football in this country. You hear a little bit less about the reshoring of the jobs and the quality of the jobs that are coming back here. Yeah. Well, thats true. I want to be careful. This is not your grandfathers factory work. This is really high tech factory work. There are fewer jobs but they are better jobs.
