The 2021 college lacrosse season got underway in a manner befitting the oddness of the last 10 months.
Two conference foes played a non-conference game in January in Macon, Ga. In the absence of a formal live stream, hundreds of starved lacrosse fans watched a Periscope stream via a Bellarmine player (junior midfielder Cameron Herbert) recovering from illness and saw field level highlights courtesy of an injured Mercer player (sophomore midfielder Cole Leggett) posting to IL’s Instagram. One face-off specialist one all but one face-off and the teams combined for just seven fewer turnovers than shots.
Monroe was the site of the PCM Invitational, an 12 school event that saw the likes of Pella, Knoxville, Pleasantville, and the Mustangs taking part on Saturday.
The Dutch had a solid outing as they tied for third with 138.5 points. While no wrestlers from the Tulip City finished first in his respective weight class, they had four finish second: Damion Clark at 120 pounds, Ryan Hancock at 126, Ryan Van Donselaar at 160, and Kody Huisman at 285 (heavyweight).
Knoxville finished seventh in the field with 93 points. The Panthers had a trio of their own wind up finishing second in their classes: Marco Alejo at 113 pounds, Luke Spaur at 132, and Andon Trout at 138.
The Knoxville Wrestling Squad went 2-1 at a quad hosted by the Panthers on Thursday. Knoxville began the meet with a 54-30 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, then trounced Chariton 60-22 before falling to Albia 48-27. Four Panthers completed the perfect night as Wayne Johnston, Gage Rowley,Luke Spaur and Andon Trout all went 3-0 on the night. Spaur and Rowley told KNIA/KRLS Sports it was a good night, but there is a lot of room for improvement..
Luke: “I wrestled OK, it wasn’t my best we’re just an inexperienced team, we’ll be OK.
Gauge: “There were some decent kids and I did OK, could have wrestled better.”
The Knoxville Wrestling Squad returned to action at the Jim Kinyon Invitational at Roland-Story on Saturday. The Panthers finished in tenth place with 62.5 points. Knoxville brought home four place winners including Andon Trout, who won the 138 pound weight class. Other place winners were, Kade Bellon in fifth place at 145 pounds, Tristan DeJong fourth place at 152 pounds, and Gage Rowley sixth at 195 pounds. The Panthers are off until January seventh when they welcome Albia, Chariton, and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont for a South Central Conference quad meet.
The Knoxville Bowling Squads fell to Bondurant-Farrar on Saturday. The boys lost to the Bluejays 2,962-2,312. Kyler Reidel rolled a high game for the Panthers of 190 and a high series of 379. Coach Shaun Renard tells KRLS Sports with some many of his boys able to get a large number of pinfall each meet, it is a tough decision of how to set up the baker games.
