Grover Hill woman dies in 2-vehicle crash

VW independent/submitted information BLUE CREEK TOWNSHIP A Grover Hill woman was killed Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Township Road 48 in Paulding County. Karenann Winters, 76, was pronounced dead at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, from injuries received in the accident. According to the Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ms. Winters was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu west on Township Road 48 at approximately 1:18 p.m. Friday and first stopped at the stop sign with U.S. 127, before continuing west onto the highway, where her vehicle was hit by a 1994 Dodge Dakota driving south on U.S. 127 by John A. Vibbert, 21, of Van Wert. Both vehicles ended up just off the southwest corner of the intersection.

Both had full-time jobs, were spending uncounted hours rehabbing the older home they had purchased, and were raising three young children, Kaden, Haley, and Rylee, a chronically ill baby who seemed to be always sick and fussy. County kicks off bicentennial celebration

DAVE MOSIER/ independent/submitted information A number of people, including U.S. Representative Bob Latta, County Commissioners Thad Lichtensteiger, Stan Owens, and Todd Wolfrum, several other county officials and downtown development representatives, kicked off this year’s celebration of the county’s 200th anniversary albeit a year late. Lichtensteiger noted that the state legislature had designated the County of Van Wert on April 1, 1820, in honor of Revolutionary War hero Isaac Van Wart, one of the three captors of British spy Major John Andre. A number of Van Wert County stakeholders, as well as U.S. Representative Bob Latta, were on hand Thursday to take a kick-off photo in connection with the county’s 200th anniversary celebration.

SWCD seeking scholarship applications

VW independent/submitted information The Van Wert Soil and Water Conservation District is offering one $500 scholarship to a student studying agriculture, natural resources or closely related fields at any Ohio college or university during the 2020/2021 academic year. Recipients of the scholarship need to have completed their freshman year in college and must be a Van Wert County resident.  Scholarship applications must be received at the Soil and Water Conservation District by May 7 .  The Scholarship Committee of the Soil and Water Conservation District will review the applications and announce recipients in June.  Scholarship money will be sent directly to the recipient’s college or university at the beginning of the academic year.

VW independent/submitted information The district will hold a preschool screening for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year on April 8 and 9 at the Crestview Early Childhood Center.  Parents or guardians of children ​3 years of age by May 1 ​who are interested in having them attend Crestview’s Early Childhood Center may have their children screened for preschool for the 2021-2022 school year. Parents or guardians requesting ​open enrollment for their preschool student​ to the Crestview School District should also register at this time.  Parents can call the Crestview Early Childhood Center at 419.749.9100, extension 3000, to schedule a preschool screening appointment for their child.
