The Nixon Library has presented first ladies exhibits before and offered lerk offered lectures topics but we havent offered a first ladies exhibit and luncheon and lecture series all combined. When planning and coordinating the concept we analyzed the needs and quickly noted the need for a specialized guest curator. Carl anthony is one of the nations foremost experts on president ial wives. Hes penned over a dozen of books and has the privilege of interviewing the clintons, laura bush, as well as the nixons and the fords. His accolades are vast and many. The staff have enjoyed a long friendship and professional relationship with carl. In many ways we consider you part of the family, carl. At things like artifacts, serial culture, paintings, fine arts, decorative arts, the white house has all of those things as well. If you are into politics, policy obviously, that is the big one people think about. Even in terms of pop culture, or political culture, understanding the white house is a symbol for american democracy. And how that symbol has changed and evolved over time. It says a lot about who we are, the american identity itself, and i think all of these different ways of studying the white house touches on all of these Different Things that you may not get in a traditional American History textbook. But if you dig deeper, there is an incredible history beneath the surface. Lindsay chervinsky, a white house historian and new in the role there, we will spend time with both of you learning about your work and about the association. We dont know who the architect was who did that expansion and who built the bell tower. Tragically, latrobe had already died at that time. He had died in new orleans. And i imagine there might be some historians in the room. And if anyone is interested in helping us solve the mystery, we would love to know. The bell tower is very beautiful addition to the church and inside the bell tower, it houses a bell that was forged by paul reveres son, joseph revere. Stamped on it, it says 1822 boston revere. Its not the only revere bell that came to washington, but it is the only one that is still in its place and being youd for its oernlg purpose. Its interesting, too, to think about this building. This is the only building on Lafayette Square that goes back to the era that it goes back to, that is still being used for the purpose for which it was built more than 200 years later.
