SRINAGAR: The National Conference and Congress have settled a power-sharing agreement in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Kargil, with Dr Mohd Jaffar Akhoon of the former set to become the council head for the initial two-and-a-half years.
The hill council election in Kargil, voting for which took place on Oct 4, was the first local poll in Ladakh since it was split from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 to become a union territory
The Congress party attributes its success in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections to Rahul Gandhi s Bharat Jodo Yatra. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed that the media would ignore the party s victory, but early trends show a clear lead for Congress and the National Conference.
Despite announcing to enter into an alliance to stop the BJP, local leaders of the National Conference and Congress are trying to lure Independents to take their support after the results.
