My Turn: House rules on safety open many questions

My Turn: House rules on safety open many questions Published: 3/12/2021 7:39:57 AM There has been no indication that the GOP members of the NH House of Representatives have made any effort to revisit, rethink, and revise the House rules established on Jan. 6, 2021. This is unfortunate. No, this is irresponsible. Not requiring sexual harassment, unconscious bias, and hostile work environment awareness training is a danger to our legislative process. If this training had been required, the GOP members would have been aware that bringing a gun to most work places creates a hostile work environment. Ironically, some GOP members have asserted their own potential need to defend themselves while doing the people’s work [e.g., Speaker Pro Tem Rice (R-Hudson): “I am a firm believer I should be able to protect myself no matter where I am … At this highly charged political time when people are angry, I am not going to be a sitting duck,” he said according to InDepthNH.org,

My Turn: It always starts with a joke

My Turn: It always starts with a joke Published: 1/29/2021 6:30:40 AM Humor has always been a useful tool of the far right to make fascism palatable to the general electorate. Don’t believe me? Google “Nazi Propaganda” or “Jewish caricature,” which is what I assume Rep. James Spillane was doing before he posted to the (now defunct) social media site Parler, a former haven for the alt-right due to its lack of community guidelines or usage standards. That’s why I cannot accept Rep. Dawn Johnson and Spillane’s “apologies,” which is a charitable description in any case. The modern alt-right flourishes in online forums, spaces cloaked in the anonymity of the internet, and how do they cover their tracks? “It’s just a joke!” Avoiding accountability at all costs, they deem their threats of fascist violence humorous to deflect responsibility. Not only does this allow them to continue to spew hateful rhetoric, but it also provides them a powerful vessel to induct y

New Hampshire’s Republican governor has once again condemned a GOP state legislator who caused a furor by posting a link to an article on a neo-Nazi website that included a viciously antisemitic cartoon. Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Gov. Chris Sununu implied that he would be unwilling to work with the lawmaker at the heart of the scandal, Dawn Johnson. Newly-elected representative Johnson shared a Dec. 7 post from the “Daily Stormer” a website run by an American Hitler-worshiper, Andrew Anglin, that is named in honor of the Nazi gutter newspaper

Local NH rep responds to anti-Semitic cartoon shared by colleague

Like us on Facebook.   WESTMORELAND — A New Hampshire representative wants to know how someone could share a link with an anti-Semitic cartoon from a white supremacist website and not know it’s anti-Semitic or that the website, Daily Stormer, is a home to Nazis. “It went public on Dec. 7 [on Daily Stormer] and she reposted it on Dec. 9,” said Rep. Paul Berch, D-Westmoreland, about the cartoon posted to social media by Rep. Dawn Johnson, R-Laconia. After Facebook blocked the post because of its source and content, Johnson then tweeted it out, and commented on Facebook, “When you try to share truth FB says NOPE we will not allow it.”
