My Turn: House rules on safety open many questions

My Turn: House rules on safety open many questions Published: 3/12/2021 7:39:57 AM There has been no indication that the GOP members of the NH House of Representatives have made any effort to revisit, rethink, and revise the House rules established on Jan. 6, 2021. This is unfortunate. No, this is irresponsible. Not requiring sexual harassment, unconscious bias, and hostile work environment awareness training is a danger to our legislative process. If this training had been required, the GOP members would have been aware that bringing a gun to most work places creates a hostile work environment. Ironically, some GOP members have asserted their own potential need to defend themselves while doing the people’s work [e.g., Speaker Pro Tem Rice (R-Hudson): “I am a firm believer I should be able to protect myself no matter where I am … At this highly charged political time when people are angry, I am not going to be a sitting duck,” he said according to InDepthNH.org,

Valley News - Forum, March 7: Hold elected officials accountable

Forum, March 7: Hold elected officials accountable Published: 3/6/2021 10:00:13 PM Modified: 3/6/2021 10:00:12 PM Hold elected officials accountable White supremacy is on the rise throughout the country, including in New Hampshire. The Southern Poverty Law Center tracked six hate groups in New Hampshire in 2020. Here in the Upper Valley, the shooting of the Hanukkah menorah on the Dartmouth campus this past December intensified fear within the Jewish community. Most distressing, members of the New Hampshire House of Representatives have acted with impunity to fuel such hatred. In December, Rep. Dawn Johnson posted a virulently anti-Semitic meme on her Facebook page. House Speaker Sherman Packard said no action was needed because Rep. Johnson has “apologized.” She has in fact not apologized, either for the content of the posting or for the harm it caused; she has apologized only for the source of the message, a neo-Nazi website.
