New Delhi, Jan 15 : Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has begun a four-nation trip to Myanmar, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines in a bid to strengthen relations with Southeast Asian nations. The visit is to not just rekindle waning interest among nations for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects but also improve regional relations before the new American government comes to power.

YANGON Myanmar and China have agreed to complete a feasibility study within one and a half years on the Mandalay-Kyaukphyu Railway, a major part of China’s planned strategic railway linking China’s rail network in Yunnan province’s Kunming with Myanmar’s Kyaukphyu port in western Rakhine State, Myanma Railways said.
On Jan. 10, Myanmar and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to begin the study for the Mandalay-Kyaukphyu Railway project, a part of the US$20-billion (26.5-trillion-kyat) China-Myanmar Railway project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

YANGON Myanmar and China signed agreements on the economy, trade and technical cooperation during the Chinese foreign minister’s trip to Myanmar’s capital, Naypyitaw, including a promise from Beijing to provide 300,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to its southern neighbor.
Wang Yi launched his first Southeast Asian tour of 2021 on Monday with an official visit to Myanmar. Wang is the first foreign minister to visit Myanmar since the Nov. 8 election, which the National League for Democracy (NLD) won in a landslide. He announced the donation of 3 million yuan (about US$464,000) worth of COVID-19 medical supplies to Myanmar during his trip.

YANGON Myanmar and China have formally agreed to conduct a feasibility study on a crucial part of Beijing’s strategic railway plan to connect China’s southern city of Kunming and Myanmar’s Kyaukphyu port on the Bay of Bengal. Accessing the port will play a key role in China’s move to boost its presence in the Indian Ocean through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
