Image Source: IANS News New Delhi, Jan 15 : Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has begun a four-nation trip to Myanmar, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines in a bid to strengthen relations with Southeast Asian nations. The visit is to not just rekindle waning interest among nations for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects but also improve regional relations before the new American government comes to power.

On Jan. 10, Myanmar and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to begin the study for the Mandalay-Kyaukphyu Railway project, a part of the US$20-billion (26.5-trillion-kyat) China-Myanmar Railway project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Wang Yi launched his first Southeast Asian tour of 2021 on Monday with an official visit to Myanmar. Wang is the first foreign minister to visit Myanmar since the Nov. 8 election, which the National League for Democracy (NLD) won in a landslide. He announced the donation of 3 million yuan (about US$464,000) worth of COVID-19 medical supplies to Myanmar during his trip.

Accessing the port will play a key role in China’s move to boost its presence in the Indian Ocean through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
