Ten Kuki-Zo MLAs in violence-hit Manipur have written to the Election Commission requesting arrangements to ensure displaced members of their tribes who have taken shelter across the country can cast their votes in the Lok Sabha election for Manipur.
Tangkhul Naga Arc Longphang (Southern Tangkhul Naga Union Manipur) chairman urged the state government to expedite the process for autonomous district council (ADC) election along with Lok Sabha election, 2024 at the earliest.
The demand of 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs for a separate administration within the state of Manipur is not legitimate, Manipur Democratic Alliance (MDA) chairman Bijoy Koijam said.
The crucial one-day session of the Manipur assembly will be held on Tuesday in the shadow of the ethnic violence that has rocked the state since May 3. The previous Assembly session was held in March and according to the constitutional norms, a session must be held every six months.
Ten Kuki-Zo MLAs in Manipur have stated that they applied for leave to not attend the assembly session. They clarified that they are united in their demand for a separate administration and urged their people to remain calm and support them. This comes after ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities broke out in the state, resulting in multiple casualties.
