A UCSC sleep study has received additional funding. Sleep researchers will be receiving over 729 thousand dollars to study the chemistry of sleeping cycles. The molecular circadian clock is a biological mechanism that regulates the metabolism and sleep cycle of all living organism. The funds will be used to follow the science of sleeping no matter where it leads.

A longtime columnist, and editor with the Salinas Californian newspaper, has died. Reportedly, Jim Albanese passed away at home last weekend. Albanese was probably best known for his column the Way-back Machine..in which he shared stories of the history of Salinas (and the local area around it). Albanese, who was born in Salinas, graduated from North Salinas High School in 1966, and later from San Jose State, worked at the paper for nearly 4 decades. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, his son, and 2 grandchildren. A Celebration of Life is expected to be held at a later date.

A local Police Chief has been elected to serve as the president of the California Police Chiefs Association. Seaside Police Chief Abdul D Pridgen began his one-year term recently. The Association works to promote (and advance) the science (and art) of police administration, and crime prevention..and to encourage ALL police officers to high professional standards.

The city of Santa Cruz has wanted to correct an error made for years, and it looks as though that will start to take place soon. The Santa Cruz Historic Preservation Commission plans to discuss the renaming of the
Louden Nelson Community Center..to the
London Nelson Community Center. That after historians determined his true name to be London.
Nelson was a Black man who was enslaved in South Carolina, before he bought his freedom. His slave owner, William Nelson, was known for naming his slaves after English cities. Shortly after purchasing his freedom, Nelson traveled to Santa Cruz and rented land eventually purchasing that land and donating his fortune to the city of Santa Cruz to keep the schools open.
