The Carlow/Mayo Public Library has a new supply of books for young readers. Last week the Bancroft Lion’s Club made a donation of $150 towards the library’s children’s materials.
The library was able to purchase five books from the Animal Battles series which teaches readers about animals such as grizzly bears, wolves and bears, four books from the Facing Life’s Challenges series which are geared to help youth facing things such as bullying, illness or divorce, and two books about wetlands and the animals that call them home.
These new books will be available to readers next week. Those interested in getting books can loan them out through curbside pick-up by calling CEO/librarian Carrie McKenzie at the library at 613-332-2544.

Born in the post First World War era, William ‘Bill’ O’Brien was born on May 6, 1921, and this year he celebrates 100 years of what he calls “living a very normal life. I have worked hard, spent my money wisely, taken care of my health, not abused my body, enjoyed my leisure time, made and kept good friends, and I have raised children who I am very proud of.”
O’Brien was born and raised on the O’Brien Farm on Lower Faraday Road near Coe Hill. He also raised his family there. He and his wife, Ruth (Ramage) had four children, Gilbert, Dan, Jackalin and Bill Junior. These days he enjoys keeping in touch with his grandkids and great-grandkids “I would say they are number one citizens of the country.”

On Sunday, April 11 Ares Worsley was announced as the winner of the Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair. Ares started two months ago by competing in the Birds Creek Public School’s annual science fair. It was his first time competing and he was looking at studying how things fly. With some help from his teacher, Chris Spencer, Ares decided on doing a project about how things fall.
He used three different sized balloons and dropped them from the top of a door frame. He repeated this three times with each balloon size and measured how fast they fell by counting the individual frames of the videos he recorded of each fall.

Veolia Environmental Services is the company that Bancroft hired to manage the town’s water and waste water services. Every year they make quarterly reports to the council in regards to the operations, updates on services and make requests for items that may be needed.
During the Tuesday, April 13 meeting of council Duane Forth gave the first quarterly report of the year. He stated that the water plant has been doing well. Over the past year there were two water main breaks, one on Cleak Street and the other near the water tower. The break on Cleak Street was bad enough that an entire section of water main pipe had to be replaced and Veolia had to report to an Adverse Water Quality Report to the Ministry of Environment as they lost all pressure in the line. However, no harm was done other than water lost in the pipe and Veolia and the town were able to replace the ruptured section of pipe and return clear wate
