Ares wins Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair | Bancroft this Week

April 20, 2021 By Kristena Schutt-Moore On Sunday, April 11 Ares Worsley was announced as the winner of the Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair. Ares started two months ago by competing in the Birds Creek Public School’s annual science fair. It was his first time competing and he was looking at studying how things fly. With some help from his teacher, Chris Spencer, Ares decided on doing a project about how things fall. He used three different sized balloons and dropped them from the top of a door frame. He repeated this three times with each balloon size and measured how fast they fell by counting the individual frames of the videos he recorded of each fall.

A local student has won an award at the Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair Ares Worsley of Bird’s Creek Public School has been awarded Best in Grade 4 across the region for his Free Fall Balloon project. Worsley charted how quickly balloons of different sizes fell and how their size affected their fall. You can check out Worsley’s project here. The Fair was virtual this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Management says while there were drawbacks because students were not allowed to meet, Co-chair of QRSTF Scott Berry says that students continued to impress this year. Finalists to compete at the Canada-wide fair include a study about the increased risk of concussion on a dehydrated brain, a look into how students learn best, and a projecting looking into how mental health has been affected by the pandemic. HPEDSB students Hay Solomon, Nina Graciano, Luisa McGilly, Taguen Tsokos and Emma Cribby will be representing the region at the national level.

Students have uploaded videos explaining their work along with slide shows, pictures and graphics all displayed in a slick interface that allows easy access to all elements of their projects. In addition, they were each interviewed by telephone.
