Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an infectious disease caused by an enveloped RNA beta coronavirus, has become a pandemic, with a mortality rate ranging from 0.7% to 10.8%. Although older adults with comorbidity are more likely to suffer severe disease and eventual mortality, diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most frequently reported noncommunicable diseases shown to predict poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients.
Aim: To determine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of COVID-19 safety measures and factors associated with poor knowledge and practice among type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study included 267 patients with T1DM aged 18-65, admitted to the hospital from January to June 2020. Data were collected via phone interviews during September 2020. The questionnaire consisted of 15 questions for knowledge, five for attitude, and eight concerning practices
Background: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) has a detrimental influence on the quality of life (QoL). The goal of this study was to evaluate the QoL of patients with PsA and its determinants at the King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 PsA patients. A questionnaire was used to collect data about their demographics. Assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) was done by the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT)-Fatigue and the FACIT-General (FACIT-G) scales were used to assess fatigue. The Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) was used to assess disease activity.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 50.33 ± 11.15 years and 78.3% were females. The mean HRQOL, FACIT-G, FACIT, and BASDAI scores were 59.99 ± 34.67, 28.18 ± 5.95, 20.01 ± 9.68, and 4.05 ± 2.54, respectively. The HRQOL sc
Middle Eastern authorities continue to play fast and loose with the transgender community, using the group's rights and identity as a political football. Without proper legislative consideration, transgender lives remain at grave risk of violence.
Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are widely spread clinical terms. GERD refers to the backflow of gastric acid to the esophagus and upper gastrointestinal tract, causing irritation. H. pylori is a gram-negative bacillus that adheres mainly to the gastric mucosa, causing peptic ulcers and gastritis. The nature of the relationship between GERD and H. pylori is yet to be explored, and few studies have been conducted. In contrast, some studies suggest a protective role of H. pylori against GERD. This study aimed to identify the demographic, clinical, and endoscopic findings of patients with GERD who underwent H. pylori testing.
Methods: A retrospective review of medical records at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between 2015 and 2021 was conducted in June 2021. Our sample consisted of 255 individuals enrolled based on age and H. pylori status. In univariate analysis, we used frequency tests
Background
A normal intraocular pressure (IOP) is essential for maintaining the normal structure and function of the eyes. Furthermore, an elevated IOP is a known risk factor for glaucoma. As the results from studies addressing the relationship between IOP and systemic health parameters are conflicting, researchers have not reached a consensus. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between IOP and health parameters among non-glaucomatous participants in the western region of Saudi Arabia.
Method
We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 255 participants aged 20 years and above who had not received any medical treatment for ocular hypertension or glaucoma at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from January 2019 to April 2021. The patients were categorized into age groups, divided by decades (ranging from 20-29 years to 80+ years); the most prevalent age group was 60-69 years. The data were entered using Microsoft Excel 2016 (Micros
