APRIL 7, 2011 – Mrs. Payne’s third grade class at Seneca Schools made Florence Kozelka’s 90th birthday extra special by sending her many birthday wishes. A couple weeks later Florence visited the school to thank the students in person. She brought them some chocolate chips cookies and while she was there she gave the children some words of wisdom. Florence said, “be honest with yourself as well as others and read, read, read anything you can get your hands on.”… North Crawford graduating seniors featured in this week’s paper were Megan Cisneros, Kayla Fortney, Lucas Cox, Danielle Furo and Tom Gillespie.

MARCH 24, 2011 – Kickapoo Earth Day will take place April 22 and 23 on the banks of the Kickapoo River in Readstown. The organizing committee invites artists and other exhibitors to be a part of the weekend, which this year has the theme Indigenous Ties to the Land. Friday night will feature a local wine, beer and cheese tasting with a concert of original music. Saturday will enjoy a daylong variety of environmentally focused crafts and activities for families, a tent set aside for workshops, and a tent highlighting talents of local artists and artisans… Gary George, son of Monica George and the late Gary George, will be recognized by the American Red Cross for his response when a friend suffered a heart attack last December. MARCH 3, 2011 – Several Soldiers Grove area residents recently enjoyed a get together at the Elling and Joan Davig winter home in Florence, Arizona. The group is pictured and included Joan Davig, Jeanette Montgomery, Patty Schoville, Joan Everson, Phyllis Benson, Bud Everson, Doug Montgomery, Roger Turnmire, Richard Schoville, Elling Davig, Jim Benson and Lorraine Davig… About 375 high school students from nine schools will participate in “Reality Daze” at Western Technical College, Viroqua Campus. The Reality Daze event is an interactive financial program designed to introduce students to money management skills. Students have studied and chosen a career in advance. FEBRUARY 24, 2011 – North Crawford Students assembled near the intersection of Highway 131 and County X on school property to protest a budget repair bill proposed by Governor Scott Walker. The students were particularly unhappy about provisions in the bill that would essentially strip public employee unions, like the local teacher union, of collective bargaining rights. The students organized the protest using Facebook on their computers Wednesday night.
