Fans of backcountry skiing, rejoice: After a delayed start, the ski season is now underway at Michigan’s Mount Bohemia. An unusually low-snow winter had pushed back opening day at the remote U.P. ski resort, where operations depend entirely on the region’s typically ample natural snowfall. The resort announced this week that it was officially open as of Wednesday, January 27.

Located in the snowiest city in the Midwest, Mont Ripley announced they will open this Saturday, Dec. 19. Mont Ripley opened in 1934 and was taken over by Michigan Technological University in 1944. The ski area now serves as a destination for students and the public interested in downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. As the oldest ski area in Michigan and snowiest city in the Midwest, Mont Ripley is a true alpine town experience: Twenty-two trails, terrain park, tubing park, 112 acres, and a scenic overlook of the Keweenaw Waterway.

Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau Keweenaw Chevrolet BUICK GMC, the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce and Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau (KCVB) are rallying community members to support local restaurants and bars through a series of “cash mobs” this holiday season. The event organizers have launched the Keweenaw’s 12 Days of Christmas to assist struggling businesses and plan to give away $2,000 in Keweenaw Cash to incentive local support. Beginning Saturday, Dec. 12 and running through Wednesday, Dec. 23, the public will be encouraged to order carryout or purchase gift certificates at a different local restaurant or bar each day. The businesses will be randomly selected on Friday, Dec. 11 at the Keweenaw Chevrolet dealership in Houghton at noon and live streamed on the Chamber’s and KCVB’s Facebook pages. Participating shoppers will be entered to win a $500 Keweenaw Cash gift certificate redeemable at more than 300 Keweenaw businesses.
