ALBANY A championship rematch with Stony Brook, in all likelihood, looms.
And, make no doubt about it, that’s the game that will largely determine the way this UAlbany women’s lacrosse season gets remembered.
But the Great Danes cannot play that game, the one their program needs to find a way to win to move forward, until this weekend and they won’t play that game unless they take care of business Thursday against Vermont in the America East Conference semifinals at Stony Brook’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

ALBANY It was an ideal start, but it still wasn’t enough for the UAlbany women’s lacrosse team to break its longstanding hex against America East powerhouse Stony Brook.

Kendra Harbinger’s already pictured in her mind how it might play out, the cheering and celebrations Saturday at John Fallon Field if she and her UAlbany women’s lacrosse teammates can end the program’s 15-game losing streak against America East power Stony Brook.
“We’ve really been putting in the work, and I think this year, more than ever, we have a huge shot,” Harbinger, a senior midfielder/attack, said Wednesday during a teleconference with reporters. “It would be the best feeling ever, as a senior, to top them.”

ALBANY The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team played solid defense out the outset of its game with third-ranked Syracuse Tuesday afternoon. The Orange, though, weren’t giving up anything, either.
“I thought we started the game really strong, holding them [down] for about nine minutes,” UAlbany head coach Katie Rowan Thomson said. “And then that period of time when they went on a run, we weren’t putting away our opportunities. Decision-making in the first half could have been better.”
Syracuse strung together 12 unanswered first-half goals after the early stalemate, and while UAlbany answered with a run of its own to start the second half, it wasn’t enough to change its fate in a 16-6 non-conference loss at John Fallon Field.

With less than a minute left in the opening half of Syracuse-UAlbany, the Great Danes had a free-position attempt to try and score their first goal of the afternoon. UAlbany’s Kendra Harbinger, the 23rd-best free-position shooter in the nation, fired at goalie Asa Goldstock, who made the save with ease.
Before UAlbany could recover defensively, Goldstock charged the midfield line and passed to Megan Carney, who was cutting back in traffic. Carney spun and found Cara Quimby, who found Emma Ward on the left side of the 8-meter. Ward couldn’t catch it cleanly, so she connected with Maddy Baxter, and the Orange led 12-0 at half.
