Swayne Finishes Sixth Among Amateurs at U S Open

Clemson, S.C.-Clemson rising senior Alexandra Swayne finished sixth among amateurs and fourth among active college players at the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open at The Olympic Club late Friday evening. Swayne missed the cut by four shots with a score  of 152 for the first 36 holes, but was tied for sixth out of 31 amateurs.   Maga Ganne, a  high school golfer from New Jersey, was the top amateur after two rounds with a 138 score, just two shots off the lead. The only college players ahead of Swayne after 36 holes were Maja Stark of Oklahoma State (141), Gurleen Kauer of Baylor (144) and Rachel Heck of Stanford (147). Not only did Swayne finish tied for sixth among amateurs, she finished ahead of 34 professionals, including LPGA stars Cheyenne Woods, Nelly Korda, Charley Hull, Michelle Wie West, and Sung Hyan Park.  Wie West and Park are past Major Champions on the LPGA Tour. Swayne had seven bogeys and a birdie in her first round  on Thursday when she shot a 77.  A highlight took place

Clemson Starts Play at NCAA Regional on Monday Clemson, S.C. – The Clemson women’s golf team will begin competition in the NCAA Columbus (Ohio) Regional at The Scarlet Course on Monday.   Clemson is one of 18 teams in the field, and the top six after three days of stroke play (May 10-12) will advance to the NCAA Finals at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, May 21-26. The Columbus Regional is one of four regional sites that include 18 teams each.   LSU, Stanford and Louisville serve as hosts of the other three regionals. Clemson is the number-eight seed in the regional that also includes number-one seed Duke and number-three seed Virginia from the ACC.    This is the sixth time in seven opportunities that Clemson has earned a regional bid.  Last year’s tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.
