Edwards County held the Section 23 Public Speaking and Quiz Bowl competitions recently at ECHS. Thanks to the fourteen schools who participated in the events and those who volunteered their time to judge the event. Edwards County's Varsity Quiz Bowl team took 5th place for the evening. Members of the quiz bowl team were: Cage Metcalf, Kassidi Metcalf, Jake Wiseman, Campbell Biggs, Aly Williams, Wyatt Greathouse, Haiden Haley, and Sam Bailey. Quiz bowl questions focus on general agriculture and FFA knowledge.
The Fairfield City Council met last night with all members present. The "hot button" item for the night was the understaffed Fairfield Police Department. The department is down to 6 officers and the Chief, with one of the officers leaving for a military assignment very soon. Mayor Gary Moore proposed an Intergovernmental Agreement with Wayne County which would have Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies cover law enforcement for the city of Fairfield when necessary. In the agreement, the city would pay the county $50.00 per hour for the coverage but only the hours actually providing city coverage. Mayor Moore stated that he had met with Chief and Sheriff regarding devising a plan to maintain coverage for the city. Alderman Cody Atteberry stated that he hadn't been made aware of the proposal until he received his meeting documents. He further stated that he thought the matter was being rushed and deserved more study. The annual tax levy was unanimously approved. The levy 4.
Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a deer collision early Tuesday morning near County Road 1549 North. They say the 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by 62 year old Jerry Brock of Fairfield had to be towed from the scene following the accident. More than $1,500 in damages are estimated. Rinard resident Cody R. McKinney pled guilty in Wayne County court Tuesday. McKinney pled out to a charge of Possession of Less than 5 Grams of Meth. Charges of Driving on a Suspended License and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle were dismissed as per the plea deal. He was given a year of probation and sentenced to 58 days behind bars which he'll be serving concurrently with a sentence handed down out of Clay County. Additionally, McKinney will be expected to pay $2,635 in fines and court costs. The original arrest in Wayne County happened back in February. McKinney is expected to report to jail on January 16th. FCHS Fall Sports Awards The Mules held their team awards last night. The Mules volleyball team held their awards at the Journey Church. The Ceremony started with Volleyball head coach Chet Snyder thanking the crowd for coming. He then moved to some key milestones that the team hit this season. The team finished with a overall record of 33-6 the 2nd most wins in FCHS history, BDC champs for the fifth straight time, regional champions, Emerson Robbins set the school record in kills and Rylee Edwards set the school record in assists. As far as awards go here is how it went: Freshman most improved Libby Kline, Most Improved JV Lilly Gacek (Gay-sick), most improved varsity Kate Book, Defensive player of the year Lucy Britt, Team MVP Emmerson Robbins and Lady Mule Award Kaylie Barger. Fairfield Veterans Day Parade The Fairfield Veterans Day Parade will be held November 5th at 2:00. The day will begin with a breakfast at St. Edwards Catholic Church from 7-9 AM. The breakfast will be for all veterans and their spouses. Please call Dian Zurliene at 516-1808 to RSVP. Festivities will begin at 1:00 PM with a flag raising at Freedom Park. Elizabeth Gonzalez will sing the National Anthem, followed by a concert by the Roasted Chestnuts. Parade line up will start at 1:00 PM on North First Street and will line up as entries arrive from Court Street north toward North Side School on a first come, first served basis. 2 Semi trailers will be provided for the veterans to ride on. We would like to encourage everyone to come out to see the parade and honor our veterans. Following the parade there will be a meal for parade participants at the Fairfield Elks Club, sponsored by FNB.
