A prominent Bangladeshi woman investigative journalist was released from jail on Sunday after a court granted interim bail to her, a week after she was arrested on charges of stealing important government documents under a colonial-era official secrecy law that triggered widespread protests at home and abroad, including by the UN.

Journalist Rozina Islam gets bail
A Dhaka court has granted bail to Prothom Alo senior reporter Rozina Islam till July 15 in a case filed under the Official Secrets Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah passed the order virtually on Sunday morning upon a bond of Tk 5,000.
The court also asked Rozina to submit her passport before it.
Rozina Islam’s lawyer Ehsanul Haque Shomaji said, “The court heard the arguments from sides and granted her bail upon a bond of Tk 5,000.”
On May 20, the same court heard the bail petition and set today to pass the order.
The journalist was shown arrested in the case and sent to Kashimpur Women’s Jail on May 18 after her bail was rejected.
Journalist Rozina Islam walks out of jail after one week
Prothom Alo senior reporter Rozina Islam, who was sent to jail on May 18 in a case filed under the Official Secrets Act, walked out of Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail on Sunday afternoon after securing interim bail from a Dhaka court.
Rozina came out of the prison around 4:15 pm, according to jail officials.
Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court granted interim bail to Rozina Islam until July 15 in the case.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah granted the bail on a bond of Tk 5,000. The court also asked her to submit her passport before the court.
