Prothom Alo Senior Correspondent Rozina Islam walked out of jail this afternoon, seven days after she was arrested in a case filed by the health ministry.
She left Kashimpur Central Women s jail in Gazipur where her family members and colleagues were waiting for her.
Hosne Ara Bithi, jailer of Kashimpur Women s Central Jail, said they released the journalist at 4:18pm upon receiving the court order.
Earlier, the prisons authorities received the bail order after Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Baki Billah in the morning granted her bail on a bond of Tk 5,000 with two guarantors one of whom must be a lawyer, and the other a legal guardian.

Popular actress Jaya Ahsan condemned the arrest of Prothom Alo Senior Reporter Rozina Islam, who fell sick after being held for five hours inside the Bangladesh Secretariat, reportedly by Health Ministry officials on Monday, May 17, 2021. “Rozina went there to perform her duties as a journalist. We all saw how she was lying on the floor after being assaulted by the authorities. Are we not civilized? Is this how we treat our journalists?” the National Award-winning actress wrote. She also mentioned, “The hands firmly pressed on Rozina’s neck symbolise the muzzling of free speech and free press in this country. This is a shameful incident that sullied the country’s 50th anniversary of independence. I am demanding the immediate release of Rozina Islam.”
Court to pass order on Rozina Islam’s bail Sunday
A Dhaka court has set Sunday to pass order on Prothom Alo senior reporter Rozina Islam’s bail petition in a case filed under the Official Secrets Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah fixed the date today (Thursday) after the bail petition was heard virtually.
Rozina was not produced before the court during the hearing.
Citing the reason of delaying the bail order, the court also allowed time for prosecution to submitting some important evidence before the court to examine on Sunday.
Earlier, the prosecution, during the hearing, wanted to submit a video that circulated last night. In the video, Rozina was found saying that she had made a mistake and would be willing to give a written undertaking.
