Kuala Lumpur-listed Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd, which owns a 21 per cent stake in Cambodia Airports, expects two consecutive years of growth in 2021-2022 from its business in the Kingdom as Covid-19 vaccination campaigns gather pace globally.
MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd Research (MIDF Research) noted that effective immunisation drives around the world would buoy the rate of recovery in airport traffic and potentially bring higher earnings visibility for the group from its concession business, online news portal Malaysia Reserve reported on April 1.

Cambodia’s economic recovery uncertain amid Covid

Phnom Penh is a capital that is bustling with economic activity, usually congested by morning and evening traffic, but has now turned quiet due to the resurgence of the Covid-19 community outbreak on February 20.
Now nearly six weeks on, more and more public and private institutions are closing their doors and instead transitioning online. Meanwhile, some businesses in the tourism and entertainment sector which have just recently reopened are now closed.
A two-week curfew from 8pm to 5am starts today in Phnom Penh, a day after a sub-decree detailing administrative measures to contain Covid-19 was issued by Prime Minister Hun Sen.

CSHD destroys 181 units of UXO found in Oddar Meanchey village

Cambodia Self Help Demining (CSHD) destroyed 181 pieces of unexploded ordnance (UXO) on April 6 after finding them on April 4 in Po Chas village of Banteay Ampil district’s Beng commune in Oddar Meanchey province.
The organisation said they had collected 3,352 pieces of mixed ammunition and 116.5kg of pistol bullets from Oddar Meanchey province in 2020.
Chhun Bora, Explosive Ordinance Disposal Supervisor and Training Manager at CSHD, said on April 6 that his organisation had safely detonated 181 mixed pieces of ammunition as well as 110kg of pistol bullets.
He added that they had detonated all of the ammunition in Siem Reap province’s Chi Kraeng commune where they have a large open field and it is easy to do the work safely.
Prime Minister Hun Sen on April 1 formally approved a 2021-2025 three-phased national tourism roadmap and a 2021-2035 Siem Reap provincial tourism development master plan to navigate the sector’s emergence from the Covid-19 pandemic and support its recovery.
Through the strategies put forth by the two guidelines, Siem Reap could attract 10.9 million domestic tourists by 2023 and 7.5 million international tourists by 2025, creating 940,000 jobs and generating an additional $6 billion in revenue for the province’s economy, the Ministry of Tourism said in an April 1 press release.
The master plan prescribes seven primary strategic areas for the province’s tourism development – prioritisation of tourist sites; new tourism products; promotion; quality and sustainability; environmental management; infrastructure and connectivity; and administration.
