We are talking about things that the San Jose Police used to be able to do but cant anymore due to the budget cuts and the shrinking police force. Now the police are going out on golf carts and hired by private businesses. They are off duty san jose cops working private patrol in a golf cart instead of a police cruiser. Its so quiet. Its stealth mode. Reporter downtown san jose businesses are paying extra for the private security service. Its a boots on the ground presence with sworn armed officers who respond to things like graffiti enforcement and street crimes things the on duty san jose pd used to do but cant because of short staffing. Vazquez on the scene. Reporter we just got a police briefing. You can see officers here on the scene dealing with this officerinvolved shooting that happened around 10 a. M. Today. What happened is that theres a group from public works, the City Public Works Department that comes out and helps Homeless People get into shelters. They were talking to a man and he apparently did not want to go into a shelter. At some point, the public works folks called the Police Department and said the man had a large knife and that he was acting in a threatening manner. Now, just a couple of minutes after 10 00, the police arrived. Ill let police chief greg suhr pick up the story. Our suspect on shotwell street with a large waving a large kitchen knife.
