A car crashed into a Dongan Hills utility pole Sunday afternoon, leaving the support leaning precariously toward the street. The crash occurred at around 3:15 p.m. near the 1200 block of Richmond Road, but did not cause any injuries, said an official from the FDNY’s press office. Emergency radio transmissions indicated authorities requested Con Edison inspect the pole following the one-car crash; however, a spokeswoman for the company said the pole belongs to Verizon. We need jobs and our wetlands (letter to the editor) Today 7:30 AM By Ilona Ponyatyshyn The Graniteville wetlands located on the North Shore have demonstrated their importance in protecting its residents from severe flooding. After reading Joseph Ostapiuk’s April 23 article, “‘Nobody’s listening’: Dire warnings as BJ’s construction nears starting date,” I became concerned for the safety of people living nearby as the wetlands’ unique benefits to absorb water and mitigate floods become compromised with continuing construction of retail warehouses. Furthermore, I see potential in our wetlands to provide economic stimulation through the use of its many natural resources. As a fellow Staten Islander, I’ve come to appreciate the benefits of the surrounding wetlands as they provide habitat for unique wildlife, purify water and protect against flooding. However, while I understand that maintaining these benefits has prevented more than $625 million in property damage

A crowd of several hundred people marched down Forest Avenue Saturday afternoon to protest a BJ’s Wholesale development slated to be built on the Graniteville Wetlands. Marchers began to gather at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Richmond Avenue in Graniteville just before noon and only days before work could potentially begin at the site. Some who attended held signs that read, “Save Our Wetlands” and “Wetlands Not Warehouses.”
