more on all of this coming up in just a little bit. thank you. let s check in with charlie max doing traffic for us this morning. it s quiet morning but we already have an accident to deal with northbound 395 on the infound 14th street bridge, we have an accident. the light rite lane gets by. the good news is very light volume is keeping this without much of a delay. if you are heading up to the 14th street bridge, keep in mind, it is the right lane that you will use to get by. in contrast, in maryland, things are rather quiet. volume building on southbound 270. quiet still on 270 and the dry pavement is helping that trip a little bit this morning. that s a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. now, to the deadly weather here in the u.s. the number of dead has risen to 12 in the south. the twister cut a path of destruction from louisiana across mississippi. more than 100 homes are unlivable. the final tally not expected until sometime tomorrow. emergency workers set up

we had blankets and things. i got in there in time. reporter: officials say one tornado brought winds upwards of 170 miles per hour, the base 1; 1/2 miles wide. in mississippi, sturdy brick homes reduced to rubble. ron sullivan and four customers in his small grocery store. when it hit the building it literally was an explosion. it was gone immediately. reporter: throughout the tornado zone there are stories of survival. dale thrasher was in the hillcrest baptist church when the tornado hit. it destroyed the two-story building but with the building crumbling around him he found safety under a table, near the pulpit. one area of the church that didn t get destroyed. i asked the lord to protect me. covered my head and heard the building starlight caving in. reporter: amazingly he walked away with just a small cut. five people in this county didn t make it. authorities tell us that two of them were children. abc news, french cap, mississippi. closer to home heavy

destructive tornado outbreak this season. the governor calling it a scene of utter on lit race. hundreds of homes were damaged and destroyed and thousands of people still without power. in darlington, south carolina, the winds overturned mobile homes and ripped treed out of the ground. three people were injured there. further west, two deaths have been blamed on the storm. one carved the path of destruction across the city of al bertville. by far the greatest destruction from the weekend s tornado outbreak was in mississippi, the unstoppable force of nature claimed ten lives, including three children. in yazoo, the tornado measured a mile wide. it left behind nothing but depre. one resident said it was like looking into the eyes of death. ed lavandera is live with the latest. reporter: good morning, kiran. this is what s left of the hillcrest baptist church here. preliminary reports from the national weather service say at one point the storm that passed through here, the t
