i think people know we re fiercely independent. he s been listening to way too much television. reporter: at least one voter hasn t gotten the message yet. martha: shannon, you just hit on so many issues that have been front and center in this campaign, clearly a connection to president obama and his polices has been problematic for joe manchin, right? reporter: it has. and the issue that resonates most in west virginia is the issue of cap and trade legislation, it is something the obama administration has pushed hard, john raese, republican, is pointing that out, even though the governor says he opposes it, the other issue is the issue of health care. here s john rases talking about that on the campaign trail. our governor s believes that your health care should be run by bureaucrats. i don t believe that, either. i believe that health care is between you and your doctor. period.
there was evidence over the weekend from another poll that in heavy democratic districts that turfout there is down and g.o.p. numbers are up. remember, washington state is a mail-in only state. and voters can mail in those ballots as late as tomorrow. shepard, on election night, we may only from 60% of those votes counted. in a close race we could still be here counting on friday. shepard? shepard: in west virginia the race to fill the seat of the longest serving senator in american history could be the he bellwether for the democrats and the rest of the nation. the late democratic senator robert byrd served in congress for more than 50 years. he died in june. west virginia s governor joe manchin has been trying to distance himself from the washington establishment in order to claim byrd s seat. he is extremely popular very tight race with the republican rival john raese. earlier today on studio b i spoke with howard dean campaign manager joe trippi about what this race could mean
with a third party candidate pulling 6% of the vote. in washington state, new fox polling shows incumbent democrat patty murray with a two-point advantage over dino rossi, that is one of the handful of seats that democrats need to keep to stem any possibility of a g.o.p. takeover. if democrats hold on to california, west virginia, connecticut, washington, if they can just hold three of those. then they have it locked up. the real clear politics average puts joe manchin 4-1/2 ahead of challenger john raese who has been working hard to portray the governor as nothing more than a yes man for president obama who has a 29% approval rating in the mountain state. i just watch what he does and not what he says. the rubber stamp fits joe well. no one can be a rubber stamp and do what we had to do. in california, incumbent
