good morning, everyone. it s wednesday, august 25th. i m alisyn in for gretchen this morning fortunate morning. the results are in. john mccain is still in the game for one more election. in alaska, could palin s power have come through for her candidate? it looks like that could very well happen and in florida, it was all about the money. a big spender takes the ticket. your results inside america s election headquarters momentarily. ok. the mayor of new york standing by his support for the mosque near ground zero. listen. to implicate all of islam for the actions of a few who twisted a great religion is unfair. and unamerican. are those against the mosque now anti-american? we report, you decide. meanwhile, it s breakfast time. you can have your bagel but if you want the bagel sliced, it s
outsider but john mccain poured on the cash and started running these commercials that not only depicted him as a huckster, talking about one infomercial thing that he did but also, look, this guy was a washington insider. he used to vote for a whole bunch of bills that had a whole bunch of earmarks including the very famous bridge to nowhere. bridge to nowhere doesn t get you votes these days. one of the interesting things that this race brought out was that j.d. hayworth s presence at his position made john mccain to the right more. he had to become more conservative on some pivotal issues such as immigration so now people are wondering if his position on that is a moving target and if, in fact, you ll hear senator mccain talk more again about amnesty as he did famously, you know, with ted kennedy before this election but now, he s changed his position so it will be interesting the next few months how he frames his positions on some of these things. what a seamless transition to
ranks behind him. the governor primary is really the triumph of money. rick scott made one his company made $1.7 billion ripping off the taxpayer. he got $300 million as a golden parachute and he apparently spent $60 or $70 of it convincing the voters of florida he was honest. it shows the enduring truth of what abe lincoln said, you can follow some of the people all of the time. a big surprise. i knew in the last week or two that mccain had a mast to lead. but at the start of that race, mccain was down around 48 and leading hayworth 48-41. mccain had a lot more money and ran extensive negative advertising against hayworth but i think, basically, it shows how discriminating and smart the voters are that they really picked through this stuff and when they see someone with a good record over the past like
she had a slim lead over the former congressman j.d. hayworth and that helped propel john mccain to a major victory yesterday, a costly one. it cost him $20 million but a win nonetheless as he s expected to roll right through against the democratic nominee. camera and microphone last night in phoenix after he won. here s senator john mccain on winning the primary. it s a distinct honour of being our party s nominee for election to the united states senate. had a good night. now let s go back to work. fight as hard as we can through to november and get our country back to building a future as great and honorable as our storied past. not great words for j.d. hayworth. i expected a hug and they didn t. it was a bloodbath. they were at each other s throats. when brian was mentioning early on, j.d. hayworth was a tea party favorite and he was trying to paint himself as a washington
his home state. and he s spent some $20 million to rebound from attacks launched against him by his challenger, former congressman j.d. hayworth. mccain is now in campaign mode for the november midterm election. take nothing for granted. i ll fight with every ounce of strength and conviction i possess to make the case for my continued service in the senate and the policies and principles i will advocate and defend if i m fortunate enough to be re-elected. and there s some people who say senator mccain had fought this campaign and past campaigns, the presidential campaign to be president and anyway, in florida, democratic congressman kendrick meek wins the nomination over billionaire jeff greene. meek will face governor charlie crist running as an independent and republican nominee marco rubio at a time when some democrats are distancing
