From Guntersville, Captain Mike Gerry reports it’s likely the unseasonably cold nights will have chased the bass off the beds for a few days, but they’ll be back in the shallows as soon as we get a sunny, warm afternoon or two. The fish move in and out of the shallow bays, flats and creeks at this time of spring, spawning on hard bottom near structure like stumps and logs, grass and boat docks.

At Lake Guntersville, Captain Mike Gerry reports the spring bass bite is on, and should continue despite the chilly nights forecast for the coming week. He said most bass have moved to water less than 10 feet deep, where water temperature is in the high 60′s and low 70′s in the afternoons, and many fish are spawning or have spawned.
This means searching out hard-bottom areas with grass, blowdowns, stumps or boat docks likely will produce for the next several weeks. He said best baits have been soft plastics, including his favorite Missile bait D-Bombs, Missile 48 stick baits, Tight Line football jigs and tight-Line Swim jigs. Lewis Smith Lake won’t be the place to fish for the next week or so, but you still may want to visit the spillway area to see something that rarely occurs if the water rises as expected, it may pour out the overflow canyon on the west side of the dam for the first time in many years. Overflow starts at 522.0 feet elevation, and the forecast was for 521.7 feet Thursday night. If this happens, the water from the lake takes a long, circular route to the west before dumping back into the river well downstream of the dam.

Alabama Friday fishing report
Longer days, warmer afternoons and an end to freezing nights means the largemouth bass spawn is rapidly approaching across all of Alabama, and probably already underway in lakes in the southern counties.
Largemouths typically spawn on firm bottom around stumps, blowdowns, docks, seawalls and scattered weeds any sort of cover where the baby fish can find at least some cover from the panfish that will move in and try to eat them when they’re a few days old.
McDonald’s Big Bass Splash will be on Lake Guntersville in Scottsboro, AL on March 26, 27 and 28th at Goose Pond Colony. In person registration will be held on Thursday, March 25th from 12 pm - 8 pm.
