TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s swimming and diving team swept the ACC Performers of the Week on Tuesday. Peter Varjasi was named the ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while Jesco Helling was given the ACC Men’s Diver of the Week. Both led the Seminoles to victory at the TYR Classic in Miami over the weekend. Varjasi set two meet records, winning the 100 and 200 free. The Erlangen, Germany, native lowered his own mark from 2021 (1:38.25) in the 200 free, touching at 1:37.45, winning by almost four seconds. He then eclipsed Blaise Vera’s (Pitt) mark in the 100 free (44.20), with a time of 44.04. He also turned in the top time in the 200 IM (1:49.92) and led the Noles to victories in the 200 and 400 free relays. “This summer, Peter stepped up and took his work ethic to another level,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “He has stayed there ever since. Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State swimming and diving teams started the 2022-23 season on Friday in dominating fashion. The women took home the title at the Osprey Invite in Jacksonville, Fla., winning with a total of 1,345.5 over Georgia Southern (699) and North Florida (666.5). “Today was a lot of fun,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “The ladies swam well and had a great attitude and beat two teams. It was a pleasure to be around the team and their spirit today.” The Seminoles flexed their depth, winning every race and sweeping 13 of the 17 events contested. Contributing five wins on the day was Edith Jernstedt, who was a part of the 200 medley, 400 free and 200 free relay victories in addition to her own wins in the 100 fly (54.33) and 200 fly (1:59.27). Gloria Muzito contributed four wins, leading the Noles in the 200 free (1:52.26), 50 free (24.04), and 100 free (51.87). Miami, Fla. – For the second straight season, the Florida State men’s swimming and diving team won the TYR Classic, which was hosted by FIU at the Biscayne Bay Aquatics Center. After taking the title in 2021, the Noles won the two-day invite in 2022 with a score of 552 points ahead of FAU (475), Keiser (388), St. Thomas (354), FIT (341), and Lynn (315). “It was great to get the victory today and start the season off with a win,” FSU assistant coach Steve Barnes said. “We are laying a great foundation to build on. We have more room to grow and improve, but this weekend was a great kickstart to get us ready for the upcoming meets.” The Seminoles took a 31-point lead (276) into Saturday’s meet and picked up right where they left off, winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.47 behind Mason Herbet, Jason Martindale, Adrian Aguilar and Blake Moran. Yordan Yanchev and Utku Kurtdere turned in the top two times in the 500 free, with Yanchev winning the top heat at 4:28.
Tallahassee, Fla. – The 28th Golden Nole Awards were presented on Monday night by the FSU Student Athlete Advisory Council inside Doak Campbell Stadium. The event highlights the contributions made in the community and recognizes student-athletes that have been exceptional leaders in and out of the athletics arena. “It was a perfect night to celebrate our student-athletes,” FSU director of student-athlete development and events said. “We haven’t been able to gather like this in years and to be back together in this setting is incredible. I’m so proud of the service our student-athletes put in this year.” Beach Volleyball earned the Director’s Cup for Service, accounting for 301 community service hours, for an average of 14 per student-athlete this season. “I am so proud of our team,” FSU beach volleyball head coach Brooke Niles said. “This team is amazing in the fact that they work really hard and want to make a positive impact on the community of Tallaha
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three swimmers from the No. 21 Florida State men’s swimming and diving team were selected to the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships back in Atlanta from March 23-26. Max McCusker earned his third bid, while Yordan Yanchev and Mason Herbet were chosen for their second. “We’re excited for this group going to NCAAs,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “This meet is extremely competitive with the extra class of COVID fifth-years.
