The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District’s commission recently set the not-to-exceed millage rate for the next year, as well as reviewed the district’s annual audit and raised the stipend for commissioners.
At the monthly meeting on July 21, the commissioners voted unanimously 3-0 to adopt a tentative millage rate for fiscal year 2021-22 of 1.3089 mills, which would exceed the rolled back rate of 1.072 mills. The not-to-exceed rate would result in a 22.02 percent tax increase to the district’s residents.
The millage rate can be lowered but not raised during the budget process.

The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District commission approved three resolutions at its last monthly meeting, as well as heard about two promotions and opened discussions on increasing commissioner compensation, evaluating administrative pay raises and improving security at both fire stations.
On April 14, the commissioners voted unanimously 3-0 on each of the proposed resolutions.
The first resolution allowed the district to enter into a contract with Elite 1 Flooring Installation for about $16,460 to purchase new CPT tile for specified offices, sleeping quarters, training room and gym at Station 171. Fire Chief William “Bill” Briscoe noted that three bids were received for the project.

The Sanibel City Council bid farewell to three council members at its recent meeting, as well as considered special events permits and a change to temporary outdoor signage for businesses.
On March 2, Mayor Mick Denham marked his final meeting serving on the council, along with Councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench. Denham did not seek re-election in March, and Goss and Muench were appointed late last year on an interim basis to fill the seats of former Mayor Kevin Ruane and Councilmember Jason Maughan as they ran for office in November’s election.

Publix, the most prominent private partner in Floridaâs vaccine distribution network, strongly disputed a news report insinuating the company had been allowed to operate with little oversight.
The company’s corporate office offered strong words in response to a Miami Herald report regarding the supermarket’s COVID-19 vaccination program.
âFrom the beginning of the vaccination rollout at Publix pharmacies, Publix has been in direct and constant contact with the state, requesting direction and frequently detailing vaccination plans at our stores,â reads a statement from the Lakeland-based grocery chain.
