Sanibel elections: Six candidates vie for three open council seats © The City of Sanibel Sanibel City Seal Sanibel residents will take to the polls Tuesday to vote in three new city council members from a pool of six candidates. The non-partisan race will fill vacancies left by Mayor Mick Denham, whose term expires this year; and councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench, who were temporarily appointed to fill vacancies when Kevin Ruane and Jason Maughan left to run campaigns for other offices. After the election, councilmembers will return to appoint a new mayor and vice mayor during a March 16 meeting.

Six people are campaigning to take up the seats currently held by Mayor Mick Denham, who is not seeking re-election, and Councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench, who were appointed late last year to replace former Mayor Kevin Ruane and Councilmember Jason Maughan for the interim. The pool of candidates includes Mary Bondurant, Scott Crater, Tim Drobnyk, John Henshaw, Jason Maughan and Mike Miller. Elections held for Sanibel City Council seats are non-partisan races.

The Sanibel City Council approved price increases for its non-resident beach parking decals at its recent meeting, as well as heard reports about the Jordan Marsh Water Quality Treatment Park and the city’s short-term rental registration program. On Feb. 2, the council voted unanimously 5-0 to raise the cost of its “B” decal to $300 and its “BC” decal to $399, while also approving a one-time 25 percent discount due to the late release of this year’s decals – setting the final prices for the 2021 non-resident decals as $225 for “B” and $324 for “BC.”

City council decides on appointments By TIFFANY REPECKI / trepecki@breezenewspapers.com - | Jan 26, 2021 LEE COUNTY Lee County Director of Parks and Recreation Jesse Lavender conducted a presentation on the conceptual design for the Sanibel Causeway Islands Project at the Sanibel City Council’s meeting. The Sanibel City Council made appointments to the city’s Planning Commission, Contractor Review Board and Vegetation Committee at its monthly meeting, as well as heard a presentation on Lee County’s conceptual design for the upcoming Sanibel Causeway Islands Project. On Jan. 19, the council filled three seats on the planning commission two full-term appointments and one partial-term appointment plus one contractor board seat and three vegetation committee seats. Vice Mayor Holly Smith, liaison for the planning commission, opened the discussion on the candidates.
