Covid-19 (March 8): 1,529 cases, a new low for this year Published Modified8 Mar 2021, 10:39 am A - COVID-19 | The Health Ministry has reported 1,529 fresh Covid-19 cases, a new low for this year. Daily infections peaked in late January with a record 5,729 cases on Jan 30. The new cases for today are at the lowest level since Dec 27 last year. Of the 1,529 new infections today, 1,180 are Malaysians while another 349 are non-citizens. The number of active cases finally dipped under 20,000, helped by high recoveries of 2,076 cases today. Active cases are down from a peak of 51,783 on Feb 11. Active cases are a measure of the strain Covid-19 hospitals are facing. The country has enough beds for 34,126 Covid-19 patients in public hospitals and quarantine centres.

New cases break 4,000 mark

The previous highs were registered this week on Thursday, 3,337, and on Tuesday, 3,309. In yesterday’s Covid-19 figures, there were also eight deaths, taking the death toll to 594. Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 1,466, followed by Johor (719), Sabah (449), Kuala Lumpur (347) and Negri Sembilan (214). “The cases reported today (yesterday) were due to activities or movements before Jan 13, ” said Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah ( pic). The Health director-general said the number of active Covid-19 infections in Malaysia had reached 37,126. The country now has 155,095 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic last year. However, there were also 2,148 Covid-19 patients who were discharged, bringing the number of recoveries to 117,375 or 75.7% of the total number of cases.

This is the first time the number of infections has surpassed the 4,000 mark. The previous record high was 3,337 cases in a day. Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 2,148 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 117,375. ADVERTISEMENT In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 155,095. There are 37,126 active cases with 206 patients receiving intensive care, of which 79 require respiratory assistance. Meanwhile, the eight deaths bring the toll to 594.
