On Tuesday at sundown, Bill Lewis of Santa Cruz Sand created a piece of impermanent art next to the Capitola Wharf to bring awareness to Treasure Cove at Jade Street Park, a universally accessible playground for which fundraising is underway.
"Children develop by interacting with their peers, but those with disabilities can’t access most traditional playgrounds," writes Brenda Gutierrez Baeza in a Guest Commentary for the Sentinel. "They’re surrounded by sand or wood chips which are impossible to navigate for wheelchairs and walkers. Universally accessible playgrounds are designed to allow users of all ages and abilities, providing equality for those who are often isolated."
In addition to the big design reveal, the festival will feature interactive games, arts and crafts and a free book give away with help from local service organizations.
